Classifying Super Mario 3D Land

The upcoming Super Mario 3D Land is interesting in several ways...

It's technically the fifth 3D Mario platformer, but it plays more like New Super Mario Bros. But by its title, you could say that it's a sequel to Super Mario Land. So is it Super Mario 64 5, New Super Mario Bros. 3, or Super Mario Land 8, although there's been only two Super Mario Lands? Confused yet?

Or is Mario taxonomy a futile effort and we should just enjoy the games?

Oh come on, NSMBM probably won't even come out. It was just an idea, they weren't seriously going to make the same game with Miis in it. If they were then Nintendo reeeeeaally wants me to lose faith in them.
