Referring to the pair of pillars that drain the moat in SM64.
For one thing, why would you need to drain the moat in the first place? There's several races that would logically be capable of just swimming to provide proper maintenance if need be.
And for another, why does ground-pounding two pillars drain a fricking moat?
And who wrote the sign down there, anyway? It sounds a bit more...fancy than it should be.

Maybe pounding the two pillars caused the moat drain to... unclog or something. Through some kinetic reaction.

Maybe the sign was non-canon, or something, and just a hint thing... Although the pillars are probably there for what KK said, but the real question is, did the idea come from a couple of Toad construction workers, or higher up the chain-of-command: I could see some cigar-smoking, Toad architect now, "Yeah, put two pillars in the moat, when someone wants to drain it, they just ground pound... It's brilliant!"
P.S. Kudos if you get the reference.

The two pillars are actually over-sized buttons. They obviously put in a moat-draining mechanism in case of an emergency. Said emergency would likely involve having to access the Vanish Cap vault hidden under the moat. The Toads who built Peach's Castle are probably more clever than you think.

I want to know why the basement of Peach's Castle is so dark and full of water. Is it a sewer?

Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time proved the castle's basement is a sewer.
I do think that the two pillars are clogging / unclogging the plumbing.

It sounds like being a plumber is actually a very profitable job in the MK
