Old, but I've always wondered why it explodes dramatically when defeated. I've heard of exploding whales and exploding robots, but I still can't fathom how an undead fish goes up like an exploding Pinto after being defeated.
It's not exactly a cartoony explosion either.

I always assumed it was an experimental monster made by the Koopa tribe (don't forget they have a monster plant in space, at least during the events of SMG), a shark with a hard skeleton, and which is partially mechanical (thus why his eyes are lamps) powered up by the Power Star (and, when his power source is taken away, he stops functioning and explodes because of the damages he got).
Well, that's what I always assumed. I'm probably wrong.

The Firber in the Koopa Shells reacts with the Explodium in Kingfin's Body to create a massive explosion.

The Firber in the Koopa Shells reacts with the Explodium in Kingfin's Body to create a massive explosion. You just made that up. [/navi] However, there does seem to be some sort of reaction correlating with both the Koopa shell and the Bones in Kingfin's Body.

Sharks don't technically have bones. Their skeletons are made of cartilage. Of course, this might be different for giant space sharks, but it's just something to take in to consideration.

Yes, but the above obviously ain't true of the Mario universe. See, giant skeletal shark that you know, happens to exist in series.

I think he's just a construct animated by black magic, like an evil golem or something. He looks pretty artificial to me. He explodes because his body becomes too cracked to hold in the dark energies.

The question to also wonder here is... why would Bowser leave this creature with a single star, miles/light years away from absolutely anything of interest whatsoever?
If it's a construct, why have it as guarding a completely dead galaxy far, far away from everything else? If it's a living thing, why does it have a star in it's possession?

I guess Bowser wanted to lure Mario into a trap, with the bait being the star inside Kingfin. If the going got tough for Mario in a dark, haunted reach of space like that, there wouldn't be a whole lot Rosalina or the Toads could do to help him.

It'd a radioactive kaiju, like Godzilla.

Maybe the shells were not real Koopa shells but explosives that go off if they collide at a fast enough speed?

Mario must be a trained bomb squad officer.

Mario must be a trained bomb squad officer. We've known that since SMRPG.

He certainly is a Jack of all trades. Or should I say... a Mario of all trades *shot*

Maybe all of the Galaxies from the game (Which I firmly remain on my theory that they are pieces from Mushroom Earth and other planets in the 'Shroomverse over) were slowly being pulled to the Center of the Universe by Bowser's Galaxy Generator for the construction his new Galaxy?
