Personally, I always thought they were eyes.

They could be eyes, but I've always seen them as spots.

Eyespots.
...
Does anything proves to them being eyes ? Like, can they close ?

I assumed they were supposed to be Wiggler segments, given how they're all hanging around a massive Wiggler and are called Cataquacks. This would mean the 'eyes' are actually spots.

Well, in the Galaxy Games they are found nowhere near Wigglers.

Vent: While I don't personally think they're related to Wigglers, it's an interesting theory. kingkoopa: How'd they get into space, anyway?

I could ask the same thing about the Piantas.

The Big Crunch at the end of SMG1 mixed many parts of the universe, right ? Well, it also ripped some minor parts out of many planets. In that case, parts of Yoster Island separated into Sky Station Galaxy and Yoshi Star Galaxy, and a part of Delfino Island (probably Gelato Beach) became Starshine Galaxy. Cataquacks may simply not just exist on Mario's planet - after all, Spinies and Topmen appear in the Kirby series too.
... Dammit, I did it again. I read too much into things.

Except they were already in space before the "Big Crunch."

Cataquacks got pulled into space along with parts of the Mushroom World when Bowser invaded in Super Mario Galaxy 1&2.

I never really understood or believed the above theory, you never truly see anything brought into space bar Peach's Castle, Mario, the Toad Brigade and some of Bowser's army. When exactly do you witness parts of the Mushroom World becoming planets in either Galaxy game?

Well, it's moreso implied based on the fact that Yoshi's house is in Galaxy 2. I believe there's a thread that explains it more indepth, so give me a sec while I find it.
