Well, he can break Brick Blocks and he doesn't look like a small child when right next to Peach. So I guess it's "Normal" Mario.

Wait, are there brick blocks in the SMG games? I know there's ? Blocks, but I don't recall any brick blocks.

THAT DOESN'T COUNT I WAS TRYING TO REMOVE THAT GALAXY FROM MY MEMORY I mean.
Now that you mention it, I also remember them during some of those Minigame type areas where you have to grab the Giant coin to turn them all into starbits, right?

I just rewatched the SMB3 ending on YouTube and noticed something fascinating - even if you beat Bowser as Small Mario, you enter the Princess's room as Super Mario, which suggests that Super Mario is his default state.
However, in SMW, you meet the Princess in whatever state you were in when you finished the battle, which suggests the opposite.

But Mario still appears as Super Mario in the credits.
In the platformers, Normal Mario and Super Mario are one and the same, possibly because Small Mario was Normal Mario originally and because a 2-hit system is better than a 3-hit one.

Perhaps in the games which don't feature him shrinking, he's become stronger.
Really, he's been doing this for years. Maybe Small Mario is a natural state of his, but he's too tough to get turned to it.
Bit of a Hand Wave, but still. Makes more sense (IMO) than "Koopa black magic".

But in Donkey Kong '94, his "small" (Poison Mushroom) state is different from his "normal" state even though he apparently discovers Super Mushrooms for the first time at the end of the game (when Pauline throws one at him), so it has to happen before Super Mario Bros.
Not to forget the Mario timeline may become a big mess, following this theory. Mainly because he doesn't shrink in the sports game, yet they can't be anywhere on the timeline as they are referenced in Paper Mario and PM2.
And in Paper Mario, only one particular attack (the Hammer Bros.') can make Mario shrink, yet it doesn't come from the strength of the hit as more violent attacks in the same game don't make Mario shrink.

Hm. Well, that shoots down my theory :^P
Still, "Koopa black magic" doesn't seem quite plausible. Outside of Magikoopas and some minor occurrences (Bowser Jr. reviving Bowser in NSMB, for instance), the Koopa race doesn't seem like it'd have much in the way of magical power to me, SMB not withstanding.
Then again, Hammer Bros. practicing the dark arts wouldn't surprise me at all.

Hammer Bros, or Magikoopas, or Lakitus, or Koopalings who got their magic wands back, or Bowser...honestly, abilities that defy the normal laws of physics are widespread in Koopas, if scattered. The major branches of Koopas without magic powers are the Koopa Troopa branch, the Clubbas (all their boss powers come from powerful artifacts), and the Beetles - only about half.

Koopalmier, I remembered trying to convince everyone that "Small Mario" was a result of Koopa Black Magic a while back, and now smeone (i.e. You) FINALLY listened to me! I'm not a complete failure after all! Anyways, this has always been my theory:
Small Mario <> Normal Mario <> Super Mario
Basically, Mario is cursed with Koopa Magic, making him Small. Whenever Mario eats a Super Mushroom in this state, it counteracts the effects of the Dark Magic, returning him to normal. If Mario eats a Super Mushroom in his normal state, however, he will become Super Mario, approximately doubling in size (As seen in SSB, and SM64DS). If Mario comes into contact with Koopa Magic in this state, either through Poison Mushrooms or Enemies, then it will counteract the effects of the Super Mushroom and he will return to normal. And if it happens while he's normal, then he'll go back to being Small Mario... Makes perfect sense, right?

It's exactly your theory that got me into thinking this. But my theory is a bit different - I think that when an enemy hits Mario, it also casts a dark magic spell on him. Or else how to explain why Hammer Bros. are the only enemies in Paper Mario who can make Mario small ?

Oh well, it's a minor discrepency. Also, do you think whenever Mario defeats Bowser the curse is lifted? As this would explain why some games (primarily the 3D ones) don't have him shrinking whenever he takes damage.

Maybe. That'd explain why Mario appears in his normal state during endings.
But I have a question - what's your explanation for Mario not going small in Super Mario 64, SMG and SMG2 ?

... he ran out of Dark Magic? Or maybe he wasted it all stealing the Stars.

I always liked to think that Mario was a toddler with a mustache until he got a Super Mushroom, which would increase his age by twenty years, and if he got hit, he'd throw a hissy fit like he does when he dies, and revert back to his toddler form. But that's just stupidity from me.

And when Mario dies he goes back to fetus form.
That's kind of disturbing.

Here's something you forget to account for... how come Mario goes back to normal Mario in endings, despite being more powerful prior to that? Is there some powerful effect that removes Hammer suits/capes/propeller hats/Frog/Tanooki suits upon Bowser's defeat? Actually, when you consider this ending and how Mario goes in the door: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ge22Guzh_uw&feature=relatedI guess it make sense. Maybe the door has some kind of white magic effect attached to it? Also, note how immediately the sun comes up and light pours into Bowser's Castle, indicating maybe much of the 'Dark Land' effect is black magic induced. Perhaps it's some evil spell that turns anywhere Bowser goes to some kind of Mordor like hell.

Dark Land couldn't have been formed entirely from Bowser, though. Bowser's magic probably just made the darkness perpetual over his keep for the sake of making his residence look cool, and everything else like the volcanoes and the clouds blocking out the sun were there long before the construction of his empire. Anyways, Mario probably ditches his powerups since there's no need to have heavy and hot suits or a garish look when he's about to end his adventure and visit the woman he loves the most.
