If any of you (besides me) follow Chrono Trigger fandom, you've heard of Crimson Echoes already. If you haven't, it's an ambitious ROM hack - a sequel with new characters, sprites, and mechanics - that was the subject of a C&D letter. Square is less friendly than Nintendo when it comes to letting gaijin use their game engines. For a year and a half the matter rested there, with nothing available to the public but alpha versions of a hack that had been five years in the making and YouTube videos to whet appetites. Last month, someone got fed up and finally posted the almost-completed beta version in playable form: www.megaupload.com/?d=CR6ZTVXGThis is the biggest news in a year and a half for CT fans, and I was ticked I missed it because I didn't have a computer at the time. Be glad Mario is a living franchise - a fandom dying a slow death from starvation isn't fun.

I could go on a tirade on how SquareEnix is these days, but I think this will shut me up. I'm a big fan of Chrono Trigger, and I'm glad to know somebody finally decided to flip the bird towards SE. Thanks for sharing!

Flames of Eternity, as a separate project, is still ongoing: the blog is located at metronomeproject.blogspot.com/. Most Japanese companies are pretty lax on copyright within Japan, and Square's series have their share of doujinshi.
