Thoughts? www.waluigious.com/2011/01/mario-characters-and-why-fan-favourites.htmlBasically, a fair amount rips characters over loved by fan girls and Fan Fiction.net writers to shreds. Or in other words, Rosalina is a crappy, overrated character, we don't need the Koopalings in every game, the non Captain Syrup Wario Land villains need some more fame and popularity. etc. I probably should have ripped apart Fawful and Dimentio too...

Dimentiop would have made sense to rip apart, but not Fawful. fawful actually has a good reason for having a large fan-base.

I really like the Luigi section for some reason.
Maybe it's because you didn't really rip on him rather than rip on the fans. Or maybe because you laid out his qualities in a more tasteful manner than the other sections.
Meh, I digress.

I love this article. Well written besides some typos, and I can tell you are completely overdosed on tropes. though Rosalina isn't actually a Mary Sue-- after her backstory, her personality is almost nonexistant, really. It's just that fans have completely blown her out of proportion, like Cynthia from the Pokemon 4th Generation >_>
Also with Ashley, IMO the reason she is so overly popular is merely her emo looks/theme. Nothing about her creepy sadistic murdering undertones or anything >_______>

The Mary Sue bit was kind of a joke, although you can tell immediately they designed Rosalina to be fan fiction material. Not as in, badly written, but as in 'this is so meant to appeal to teenagers who'll write badly done fan fiction about her mysterious past and draw fan art' type way.
It just seems pretty artificial.
Contrast with say, Fawful, who was popular with the fans, and THEN Nintendo decided to play up his character to please everyone (aka, made him the main villain).
I wonder if Rosalina will be this gen's E Gadd? Aka, appears in loads of Wii generation Mario games, then vanishes never to return when the next console gen comes around.
As for Ashley... the point partly is, the 'murderous undertones' are so slight that the character is pretty much... well, non threatening. Maybe in comparison to other WarioWare characters she's seen as... dark. But the character would get pretty much torn to shreds in the greater Mario series, or even the rest of the Wario one. 'Cruelest' is a pretty hard definition to meet when you're competing with the Shroobs (complete monster in species form), Dimentio (many millenia sociopath), Smithy (dimension overlord weapon maker) or heck, even Fawful and the like (completely insane large ham who's willing to fight to the death). Heck, in the Wario series, Rudy, the Shake King, maybe the Golden Diva, Black Jewel and Terrormisu are probably more menacing. Or in the DK series, K Rool, who'd use flat out torture and murder. I guess said character is a bit lucky she doesn't boast about that aspect in front of anyone from the series who'd really, really prove otherwise.

Miyamoto dislikes Rosalina. Plus both Rosalina and Lubba are sailing through the universe, and stuff. I doubt they'll reappear, at least not as much as E. Gadd did. About that, he should reappear, he only makes un-direct appearances now (like, for instance, Bowser Jr.'s paintbrush in Mario Sports Mix has E. Gadd's logo on it).

Really? News to me.

Well, it's a bit early to tell, especially as Rosalina appeared in one more Mario Kart game than E Gadd, and neither are likely to playable in most games.

E.Gadd will return eventually stop making it sound like he's dead I loved him D= Rosalina's gone though. After they replaced her for SMG2, it was pretty much certain.

Geno's appearance and his attacks are the only reason anybody even really cares about him. Super Mario RPG was a game where you had Mallow, Bowser, and Peach on the team with Mario. Mallow was a fun and unique character, and it was kinda surprising and somewhat groundbreaking at the time to have the bad guy AND the damsel in distress fighting alongside the hero. Super Mario RPG also had plenty of memorable NPCS, like the Amphibians (You gotta love Frogfucious and his disciple), the Nimbus Land citizens, the Mole Folk, Croco, Boshi, the list goes on and on. Geno had firearms and a neat look, sure, but he had just as much personality as a freaking manikin.

...He was a freakin' mannequin, technically.
Actually, he very much has a personality. He may not be as kooky or wacky as everyone else, but he always had a certain determination to set things right. He was willing to give whatever he could in order to fight for something he believed, even putting his life on the line.
Come to think of it, he sounds quite a bit like Mario himself, wouldn't you say?

Well, yes, he is kinda like Mario, but he's still a lot less fun than Mario was in that game. Mario had the 8-bit moment in Booster Tower, the crazy sequences that happened when he tried to explain something in detail without saying a single word, his own Magic element (Jump), and he could be used as a weapon by Bowser. If it were up to me, I would have made Geno a vigilante of some sorts who was never asked by anybody to restore Star Road.

I liked Geno's minimal personality; If I recall right he was like a cop, trying to restore the Star Road. So I always gave him the personality that he was like a hammy cop/detective, not the silent/brooding-type that people think he is (because of FFVII @_@). lol. Of course I may be gravely mistkane I haven't played SMRPG since 2008

I haven't played it since... Hell, last Tuesday, so I think I know what I'm talking about.
No matter what the nice people from the Happy Hotel say.

I really like this article. I completely agree about the Koopalings - it's hard to introduce them into a game without placing all of them.
But, then again, it might be kind of interesting to see one (or a few) of the Koopalings in the background of cutscenes that take place within Bowser's castle.
Also, I haven't played Mario RPG but I NEED to!
