Because I was bored. *ahem* Yes. Anyway, I'm sure that you may have noticed several users, including myself, calling others by a nickname based upon their username and whatever else they decide to stick on. In an effort to expand this intimacy so as to include all users, I've decided to ask you this question: What would YOU like to be called? Here's the list of everyone's nicknames so far: MarioBro364(Me!): Mo-Bro EpicGyllynn: Gylls kingkoopa: KK smbmaster: SMBBQ Artemendo: Arte The list is everchanging and evergrowing, so don't be shy! Add to it!

I do not see why this is necessary. It takes zero time to go and copy/paste the names of people, and having cryptic shortcuts (SMBBQ? Seriously?) might exclude new members.
Had this been the fine and esteemed Club Waluigious, ladies and gentlemen would call each other by their full names. And titles. Harumph.
Also, I get called Art or Arte anyway, so you can call me that if you insist.

Unless I'm mistaken, I did type "Everchanging," didn't I?
By the way, that's the whole point of this thread, to include all users, especially new ones.

But everchanging implies names get changed and seriously, are we supposed to remember whether SMBBQ is SMBDX, SSMB or SQLDB now? Wouldn't it be better to just use the full names?
Also, no, new members don't get included because this is not the first topic they see and this probably won't stay on top forever. Having nicknames of any kind is insider-ism and distracts from just discussing Mario, which is why we're here.
I guess one could argue that it builds the community, but shouldn't the fact that we're all united in taking Mario seriously do that already? We don't need local meetups or anything to feel connected.

I could have done some nazi-related joke due to the fact he's German and srs, but I won't because I'm not evil enough.
Oh, and I agree with him. Not that there must be no nicknames, but it's like inside jokes or something. It's a way to show friendship, but here it certainly doesn't build the community and thus doesn't need a topic. Plus only a couple people use these.

I am just trying to make this place accessible for everyone. Throughout my Internet experience, I have found forums with full-name basis to be the most professional and friendly to newcomers. When you have nicknames, you're building a clique, you're walling yourself off. We are a small group of people, let's not jeopardize our chances of getting larger.

Honestly, I really don't think calling one another by affectionate nicknames is gonna alienate anybody. If anything, it shows that everybody seems to get along fairly well around here. But, to each his own, I suppose.

When you have nicknames, you're building a clique, you're walling yourself off. We are a small group of people, let's not jeopardize our chances of getting larger. I'd disagree with this, as someone with forum management experience. In my opinion, requiring names tends to alienate people who have any sense of privacy, or people who don't want to forever be associated in their activities in case of ruining job prospects. Heck, the biggest forums I've seen are pseudoanonymous or anonymous, Gaia Online (I think millions of members and posts) and 2ch (a million posts a day). Heck, what of 4chan? That's entirely anonymous, yet one of the most active forums online. A lot of so called 'professionals' like real names, but frankly, I find them pointless. Heck, I'm more recognisable by my username (as in, my real name would literally be too common, and by sheer coincidence my username is apparently a one off), and what exactly is the point of them anyway? Most of time, the name's not chosen by the individual, and outside of maybe discussions in logic, it has no real significance.

cheat-master30, sorry, but you misinterpreted what I said. By "full-name basis" I meant saying the usernames in full, not requiring the usernames to be real names. I meant that having "cute nicknames" completely confuses newcomers because seriously, SMBBQ?

@ cheat-master30: I think you may have missed Artemendo's point.
What he's saying is that he thinks that if we give each other nicknames, it'll make us seem as though we're a clique that doesn't take too kindly to newcomers (almost like we're telling a bunch of inside jokes that they wouldn't understand). Anonymity has nothing to do with what we're talking about right now.
My point is that as long as we continue to be friendly and civil to one another (which we have been doing quite well) and any new members, it shouldn't matter whether we give one another nicknames or not. Nicknames don't alienate people, rudeness and unkindness does.

Sorry for all this, guys... If I had known it would have caused all this controversy, I probably wouldn't have put this thread up... ...Man, this is embarrassing...

No harm done. It gives us something interesting to discuss, anyway.

I like the way my name was brought up as an example. Repeatedly.

Not to bring up a somewhat dead thread, but I do this all the time! With my friends, I'll name them what I think they look like, not what they're actually named.
Like, my one shift manager back in the glory days when I was a Barista was named "Matthew", but I always called him "Michael", it just fit him so much more!

Yeah...This thread's an embarrassment on my part...Sorry. Uhm....why? You brought up an idea, and some people disagreed was all. People will always be there to disagree with what you say; its nothing you did on your part. I, in fact, think its a cute idea.

Yeah...This thread's an embarrassment on my part...Sorry. Everything I say is crap, I don't feel embarrased though. So it's not because you bring up an idea people disagree with that you must feel embarrased. Oh, and I just bumped this thread to trawl you. : D
