How do these work? The exact method of utilizing them seems to vary.
The platformers largely have it be..presumably ingested. Which let's you shoot fire from your hands. LOGIC!
Paper Mario has what's closest to how I like to think of it working, while still being slightly off. Place it on the ground, and it shoots fire at stuff.
Galaxy has it being the same as the platformers, other than being timed. Which arguably gives further credence to it being ingested.
I personally prefer it being an item held, and the flames being dispelled when it is squeezed, like in the Smash Bros. games.
But what do you think Mariologists?
EDIT: And I just realized this is redundant since we have a Power-Ups topic. Dammit.

I like the Smash Bros theory.
However, I always just thought that Mario absorbed the power of the Fire Flower, rather than eat it.
Actually, from a platformer's standpoint, it looks more like he touches power-ups, stops time for a few seconds to change costumes, and then goes on his merry way.

I think that Fire Flowers, being magic, have seeds which are extremely hot - to the point of looking like fireballs. When you put a Fire Flower in the ground and wait a bit, it'll throw away its seeds and burn whatever touches them. And, if you ingest a Fire Flower, well, you gain their magic and can shoot fireballs (which also happen to be magical). I don't see their Smash Bros. use as being canon. They couldn't put a Fire suit on every character so they just gave the fireballs to Mario and Luigi, and transformed the Fire Flower into a flamethrower.

In a dialogue with a guy during Chapter 3, after Mario became the champion, the guy (who has a mic, BTW) asks him to tell him a secret, and Mario says (by the intermedary of the guy's text) that eating flowers allow you to shoot fireballs, to what the guy answers "That's ridiculous !".
... I explain like crap, so just believe me, 'k ?

Sorry to keep squeezing my fan-fic into everything, but in my story, the nectar is siphoned from Fire Flowers. This is then used to make a glowing, magical, red elixir. If one can ingest it and survive (which few have done), then they'll be granted the power to "wield orbs of magical flame".
But, in relation to the games, I'm kinda divided. Having them be flamethrowers is a really cool concept. But, I think that I like the idea of Mario throwing fireballs too much.

About your fan-fic, what is it ? Is it like the future of the MK, where Mario's adventures became mythological legends ? Or is it in an entirely different continuity ? If so, I'm not going to read it, sorry.

@ Koopalmier: It's an adaptation of the Marioverse in the format of an epic fantasy novel. It's like the Spider-Man and X-Men movies. They're in a different continuity than their source material. But, they faithfully capture the heart and spirit of the original settings and characters to tell new, updated (and slightly altered) versions of pre-existing stories. The story begins with the Mario Bros. origins, and ends with a massive battle between good and evil that will decide the fate of the world. If you don't wanna read it, that's okay. It's not for everybody.

Meh. Sounds too serious. Oh, well, at least it leaves me the possibility to make a fan-fic which happens in a far future Mushroom Kingdom. ...
... *goes on OpenOffice and starts writing*
On topic: Err... yeah, Fire Flowers... They are hot.

Yeah, it will be pretty serious. You've got me there. But, that's because I think the Marioverse is rich enough to be taken seriously.
It would probably be more along the lines of Bone, if you've ever read that graphic novel before. Light-hearted and charming characters with a serious threat and plot.
But, anyway.... Fire Flowers... Yeeaaahhh...

Since you can make soup out of them in the Thousand Year Door, they're apparently edible to some degree.

At first I thought it was some silly comic about some wierd mini ghost people things. But then I realized that the plot was so thick and awesome that I couldn't understand it fully. (I was young mind you) I'll have to look up the full archive sometime. Anyways... I know none of you guys will take this part of my post seriously... but in the cartoon Mario simply touched the Fire Flower to gain the powers.

Old theory of mine: The flower is absorbed into Mario's clothes, dying them red/white and allowing him to shoot fire out of his hands. Fits in with all the other superpowered suits he has.
Additionally, they can either be used as flamethrowers (PM, SSB) or be eaten (very spicy, apparently). Makes enough sense to me.
