@ Koopalmier Really...? Are we seriously trying to use a comical US commercial to explain this series' continuity...? Sorry. I'm not buying it.
Nintendo (or Rare, actually) made a big mistake and need to fix it. That's all there is to it.
In fact, I'd go so far as to say that Donkey Kong (and it's Gameboy remake) probably can't even really qualify as being canon anymore.

It's worth noting that before Donkey Kong Country Returns, nearly all of Rare's games refer to Cranky as DK's grandfather. DK64 is the only game where he calls him "son".
I think it's safe to say that Cranky being his grandfather is the better option at this point. As for what happened to DK Jr., I can't really say. He doesn't even appear anymore.
Of course, you could compromise the two explanations and say DK Sr. was always DK Jr.'s grandfather but raised him as though he were his son. This explains why Cranky is older than Mario but Mario is older than DK.
For the record, we never actually saw any of the babies being born in YIDS. Kamek kidnapped them out of their homes. We DID see Mario pop out of the stork's bad in the beginning of the original YI, and Luigi appear at the end. Baby Bowser was apparently old enough to talk before YI even started. Due to the vague details given in YIDS, one could still assume Mario is older than DK even though they were both babies during the same time period.

Except they didn't fix it yet, so for now it is how the continuity is. The only way to make it have any sense is to say both Mario and DK (jr.) were adolescents at the time of Donkey Kong (Game Boy), even if it looks unlikely.

DINOSAUR, I think I can agree with you. Cranky could be DK's grandfather, aslong as he's original DK as well. No problem there, actually.
If only we knew what happened to DK Jr...

Lets try to simplify things here...
We can all agree that Cranky is the original DK right? I don't think that any game has stated that he wasn't the original DK, there have just been games that said that Cranky was DK's father, and games that said the Cranky was his grandpa. But those games always refer to him as the original DK. And I don't remember a game where they mentioned (or had) Cranky and referred to anyone that wasn't Cranky as the original Donkey Kong.

@ Koopalmier If you knew that it didn't count, then why did you even mention it to begin with...? >_>
I fully agree with DINOSAUR and smbmaster on this one. That theory makes the most sense to me.
