No, soda isn't like beer in the ME. I think I figured it out:
FP is actually just the amount of energy that the person has, and the sugary foods and drinks help give them energy. The reason they're common in stores is because the deizens of the MK must have very high metabolisms and they gotta fill their FP quickly. That's why Mario's so chubby; His FP doesn't run out as quickly.
Only mystery to me is how teammates' moves affect his FP. I'd just call that a non-canon game mechanic. Maybe.

Other games such as Paper Mario 2 depict the partners as having their own FP meters, so I guess it could be chalked up to segregation of gameplay and story.

No, soda isn't like beer in the ME. Indeed, soda is like vine, and that only applies to the Beanbean Kingdom apparently. I think HP is a RPG-ed version of the word "energy" (as in, staying awake - once it goes to zero, Mario is dead or knocked out) and FP is a RPG-ed version of the word "energy" (as in, being full of energy like after eating too much sugar - once it goes to zero, Mario is too tired to do much acrobatics, even if hes completely awake (= his HP is full)).

I agree with the SP thing, but I think the HP is more of actual health rather than tolerance.
