Well mud seems more believable, considering it can withstand the lava, but can still be destroyed easily. (Then again, the boats get destroyed easy in water too...)

Why don't we just say the boat was really made of metal and painted with a finish to look like wood? It's the only thing I can think of at this point.

I think the reason that the boats sink is because they aren't designed very well and when you bump into something part of the boat dips under the water or the insta-kill magma and the boat simply starts to fill up and sink from there.

Aren't cruiseships made of metal?
Then again, those are huge, and they float like Icebergs do. Only the tip showing and most of the boat underneath...
Edit: Horray for self-foiling.

Metal sinks. A boat made of wood or - most likely - mud makes more sense (or less nonsense). It makes more sense for a boat made of wood or mud to float on lava than it does for a boat made of metal. Right. Excellent logic. -___-

Right. Excellent logic. -___- A boat of metal would need stuff inside it to make it float. The boats in SMS are quite small, I doubt they contain any device or something. And considering the temperature of Delfino Isle is extremely hot, and the isle is powered up by Shine Sprites, the ground of said island must have got used to the high temperature and eventually became resistent to very high temperatures. If the boats are made with Isle Delfino's earth, then it works... I think.

Then again, lava is just as dense, if not more-so, than metal.
I suppose it could be possible that the boat was made of metal and decorated to look like mud.

Oh, yes, I remember now. Sorry, I have a bad memory.
Anyway... yeah, it's the same boats during the whole game, so I think... ... Wait, are we sure the "lava" in Corona Mountain is lava ? When Shadow Mario broke the entrance to the volcano, Delfino Plaza was flooded. And although it's clearly a volcano, it's still called "Corona Mountain", which may mean that it's so inactive that it can't even be considered a volcano anymore. It may contain a water point, but the water is boiling due to the lava below (hey, it's STILL a volcano). After all there are also Fire Cheep-Cheeps living in that "lava".

The Z button guide says "the lava caverns are forbidden to the public". So yes, it's lava.
By the way... do higher-resolution images of the guide exist? There seem to be names for every little thing in there - in English! - but no way to zoom in.

The lava caverns are forbidden to the public, but that doesn't mean Mario got to see them. And many things prove the "lava" is hot water. - The source at the entrance of the volcano comes from the volcano itself - The boat - The Fire Cheep-Cheeps in the "lava" - The water spreading in the middle of the level But I see your point. Well, too bad then, for once that I thought my theory was right.

None of that proves the lava is water. And how the hell could Mario have NOT seen the lava caves if he was IN them for the ENTIRE LAST LEVEL?

I'm pretty sure he said that Mario did go through them.

Little bass boats are normally made of aluminum and float just fine. Steel works well for large ships. There is even a yearly competition to build the best concrete canoe. The buoyancy of wood is nice, but since most of the weight in any ship isn't going to be the hull, it's not too hard to compensate for using a denser structural material.
