Blocks seem to have an invisible link to something, actually (look at New Super Mario Bros. Wii, where they move alongside platforms). Some are linked to the ground, some are linked to a wall, some are linked to another block.
In Woohoo Academy, I keep noticing a block is being held in the air by a ray (an antigravity ray ?), while some others are being held by a liquid of some sort. So, this leaves three theories: - Blocks float due to magic - Blocks float due to an antigravity ray - Blocks float because, during a creation, they are plunged in a special liquid that give them their floating ability after some while
In all three cases, blocks don't actually float - they are linked to a surface by an invisible link (I think).
Solving the block mystery could solve the floating platforms one as well.

I never though of them being "linked" to something, that's actually a pretty good theory! But I'm still not sure whether they are natural (manifestations of energy that solidify), if they were created by the Ancients (tools that they used to store items), or if they are a modern invention... But the latter two present the problem of "who refills them?" Maybe the Ancients created ? Blocks as "gates" to some inter-dimmensional supply of Power-Ups, lol? But if the former is true, and they are natural, there's the posibility that they energy just re-clusters there, filling the block again rather than creating an entirely new one. But then the question of where this energy comes from, and why it takes the form of a Block arises... The will of Miyamoto I suppose. Why do some Blocks have wings, and do the ones that have wings know what they are doing, or are they just flapping fanatically like an Amoeba? And since we're on the topic, what the hell are Brick Blocks? Sure, some hold treasure, but for the most part they are just floating bricks with the sole purpose of being used as a platform or destroyed; Perhaps they are a modern invention designed to be a storage device that can hold an infinite number of objects (primarily Coins) without ever becoing full? So many questions. Maybe the number of Blocks we see in the 3D games and RPGs is more accurate, as opposed to the thousands we see at random intervals in the 2D games?

Maybe Brick Blocks are old Blocks that became useless and changed into this. Maybe that the true form of a Block is a Brick Block, but those are transformed into hi-tech machines by magic, but the magic eventually fades after a few centuries. Or those are failed Blocks that were still distributed over the dimensions by accident.
The fact you have blocks in Bowser's castles and towers leads me to believe Blocks were originally made by the Ancients, but people started making artificial and magical copies of them. Those are probably - no, definitely - used as item and free economy storage.
Considering that Blocks respawn no matter where they are, I assume they appear (if they are Brick Blocks) or fill themselves again (if they are ! or ? blocks) magically.
