Holdup! Idea!
What if the Shroobs somehow got hold of a Power Star, and changed it into something that would be immensely evil (i.e. Dark Star)?

But Power Stars aren't sentient things, or at least not as much as the Dark Star is.
I'm pretty sure the Dark Star was supposed to be an "evil" counterpart to a Star Sprite.
Maybe it was the "god" of the Shroobs. Maybe it was a Star Sprite the Shroobs captured and "shroobified"?
