Before I start, I'd just like to quickly introduce myself. I'm Indigo - as you can plainly see - and I stumbled across this forum a looooooong time ago. However, I hadn't considered actually joining until recently. I'm a huge Mario fan, and I'm hoping to take part in some interesting discussions concerning the various aspects of the Marioverse.
Now that that's out of the way...
I recently completed a second playthrough of Bowser's Inside Story (great game), and there's something about the game's story that particularly bugs me. What exactly is the Dark Star? It was said that the Dark Star was found underneath Toad Town long ago, but how long ago? How'd it get there in the first place? Where'd it come from, or who created it and why?
And another thing: Peach was the only one who could break the Star Sprites' seal on the Dark Star, right? Why was she specifically given this ability in the first place? How did the Star Sprites give her this ability if they existed long ago, in a different time period?
It's a lot of stuff to consider, but the Dark Star and its origins is a plot point that I don't feel was used to its full potential.

Hello there! The forum is only growing now, this is very good news!
Well, since the Dark Star was found underground, it's probably an artifact of an ancient evil civilization, possibly from the time of Rogueport's ancient city (since that was approximately the time all great evils walked the land).
And most likely, the ability to break the seal was handed down to Peach by the royal family... which we've never seen except for that Toad grandmother who might not be her actual grandmother.

Peach is a Star Child, thus she has a extraordinary amount of power. I mean, Mario could also break the seal of the Star Sprites. However, in-universe, only Peach's powers are known (I mean, she's the only person in the kingdom to be known to have powers - I guess nobody wondered how could Mario jump 14 ft high - and everyone thinks those powers are magic). And she's the only defenseless yet powerful character, so it's easy to use her to... err... unlock evil artifacts, for instance.
Short version: Peach has powerz. Mario and Luigi also do, but nobody noticed, not even them.
And, the Dark Star's story is lacking so much things that we can come out with millions of ideas that'll be useless.

I find the whole idea of Star Children to be bogus. Why should Mario, Luigi and Wario be there, but not Waluigi?! Waluigi is parallel in everything to the three others. Also, it's just such a random collection of people - also, DK and Wario never had much to do with the main series at all, they were just thrown in for fun.

Hm... that's actually a really interesting idea. Since Rogueport and all its legends are part of the Mushroom Kingdom, the Dark Star may be connected to the Shadow Queen and the ancient civilization she buried underground... although that's a very far-fetched idea.
And most likely, the ability to break the seal was handed down to Peach by the royal family.
Yeah, I've considered that as a possibility too.
@ Koopalmier Another interesting theory. Although, it raises another question - how did Fawful know of Peach's "powerz?"
And, the Dark Star's story is lacking so much things that we can come out with millions of ideas that'll be useless.
Which annoys me. I mean, the Dark Star seems like such an important part of the Mushroom Kingdom's history, and yet they barely even touched upon its origins.

Everyone knows of Peach's powers. Even in the original SMB manula, it was stated she was the only one who could undo Bowser's dark magic.
And DK and Wario are epic enough to get their own series. That's not just random characters. Yoshi's Island DS itself isn't part of the Mario series, but of the Yoshi series.

@ Koopalmier Another interesting theory. Although, it raises another question - how did Fawful know of Peach's "powerz?" Fawful seems quite intelligent, for all his insanity, and probably researched Peach thoroughly while working for Cackletta. I have no proof, but it makes sense.

It is said in PM:tTYD that Peach was able to break the seal on the treasure map because she was pure of heart. The ones who sealed the map sealed it so that only such people would be able to undue the seal, perhaps a similar seal was used on this Dark Star?

I think is has something do do with being a person who will someday save the world. (Or at least a large portion of it)

I think Waluigi will save the world at some point, too. Just give it time. Γ is real 2041.

Or try and screw things up with the power of music. But, yes. Waluigi should get a major role in a non-spinoff Mario game. Protagonist or not. Edit: This was about the Dark Star.

Oh I think I figured it out: Being a "Star Child" means you're destined to get your own game or series of games. Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, DK, Wario and even Bowser (M&L3) all did just that. Now we know why Waluigi has yet to star in his own game. He's not a "Star Child". Sorry Artemendo.

Oh yeah, how about Toad? He's not a Star Child and has starred in Wario's Woods!

Star Childs are also said to have a very strong power. Thus why Mario and Luigi can do all those super-heroic acrobaties, Peach has those magic powers, Wario, Bowser and DK are extremely strong, etc... But Waluigi was apparently a normal human originally, but he does a lot of difficult training day and night to try to be better than Luigi. And "Star Childs" actually means they became main characters of the Mario universe as a whole. Mario, Luigi, Peach and Bowser are the main characters of the Mario series, while the 3 others got their own series. It's obvious Waluigi will never become as important as Yoshi or Bowser but that doesn't mean he'll never get a game.

Oh yeah, how about Toad? He's not a Star Child and has starred in Wario's Woods! Yes, but Wario got top billing.

You know, these seven characters are the most important ones right now in Mario games, but who says they will be in 10 years? In 20? Toad was VERY popular back in the day, heck, WANDA THE FAIRY was in two games, one as the sole player character. Times change.

Well, until MC Ballyhoo or Rowf the Doogan get their own games, I think we're in the clear.

I would totally buy a game that starred MC Ballyhoo. But, maybe that's just the Mario Partier in me talking.

Lol that would be the best game ever. Imagine, you get to throw Big Top to kill bosses and his annoying laugh kills all the enemies on the screen at once

...That gives me an idea. I'll write it out, then put it in the "Fan Games" thread.
Back in a flash! *zooms off*
