OK, Someone HAS seen behind a Shy Guy's Mask. Anyways, several bios list Birdo's home as Subcon, so it must be a real place. I agree with the nightmare creator machine idea, as in some mario tennis game, Shy Guy tripped and his mask fell off. He looked up and Luigi saw. Shy guy put on his mask and hurried off, with Luigi just standing there, jaw dropped, with a somewhat horrified expression on his face. Thus, perhaps the Shy Guys realized they were so horrid, they had to do SOMETHING to avoid being alternately the laughingstock or the terror of the multiverse. So they made these funny little costumes. Only they know what horrors lie behind. They and Luigi...

I think that I have said it before, but I have always thought of Shy Guys as living nightmares. By living of course I mean sentinent. If you stare at a Shy Guy's face you see your worst fears. Every single bad thought that has ever entered your head starting from not that bad to EXTREME OVERKILL. And this all happens in about 0.000001 seconds. Yes it goes fast enough to drive you insane if you stared at it for long enough. Luckily Luigi didn't look for that long. Although the Negative Zone might have been created at that very moment.

I've said it numerous times, but until I see a Shy Guy's face, then I'm regarding them the way I do Shamans. That is, until one of you guys prove me wrong, I'm gonna believe they're humans/human-like.

They're solid black humanoid shapes with glowy eyes then. Works for me.

Midget shamans then. I think they are simply Shy Guys. Nothing special. They are their own species. kingkoopa: Watch the cutscene again. Luigi looks way less horrified than in Luigi's Mansion or the M&L series, and he looked at Shy Guy's face for a few seconds. My guess is that Shy Guys have an invisible body, but the only visible part of their body is they glowy eyes, so they choosed to wear a red tunic and to wear a mask, in order to be seen and to be not scary.

The luigis mansion shy guys were not real shy guys or even boo guys. They were artificially created by Vincent Van Gore like the Gold Ghost and Purple Puncher (which may have been based on the broozer or vice versa)

@koopalmer *opens mouth and then reads Bill's post* nevermind. But when did Luigi look at a Shy Guy in M&L?

Weren't there Spear Guy-ish enemies in it whose names escape me since it's been so long that I've played but there are several varieties and I should really find my old Game Boy Advance to confirm this and what were we talking about?
...Oh yeah, Shy Guys.

Yeah, Chuck guys, purple and cyan colored spear guys native to Chucklehuck Woods. And he didnt, he just means that m and l cutscenes made him look more horrified than h looked when he saw what was behind the mask.
