Okay then, what about Chakron from BiS? He seems to have the head of a Cheep-cheep, but what about the whole multi-leg thing?

Upon further investigation (read: MarioWiki), I found that the NoE Spanish name for Chakron is Pulpasible, which is a pun on the words "Octopus" and "Impassable".
WARNING: FANWANKED THEORY BELOW
If the Dark Star was sealed away at the same time the Star Cures were given to the sages, it means that The Dark Star was from at least 1,000 years ago (as evidenced by Chakron holding his pose that long) Anyway, there's a chance that The Dark Star may have been another part of the disaster mentioned in PM:TTYD.
Thoughts?

Possibly. But we don't know if Chakron started his pose right after getting the Star Cure. And the Shadow Queen's dark energy is purple, while the Dark Star's is dark blue. The Shadow Queen may have not been able to colonize more than the area covered by the game's map, either.

The Dark Star is stronger than the shadow queen so the only way they could be from the same story is if the shadow queen was working for the Dark Star

Yo, I think that Smorgs are plausible. With pollution affecting the planet, Smorgs would come about to feed on it. Or maybe the smoke got hit by some weird power. Anyways, they survive by working together. Acting alone they are powerless, but when they join together, they become more powerful than as separate individuals. Smorgs would be the monsters you see building living bridges to cross chasms, and living ladders to reach high cliffs. They are somewhat of a motivational message. 1+1 can equal 3. Anyways, they can survive day-to-day life as individuals, but when problems occur, they team up. I think they likely lived in the old wreck that is Riverside Station until they found the switch. They pressed it. Mario beat them away. They got mad, and rightfully so. Feeding on the smoke for the night, they then kidnapped the passengers, because they were friends of that red one who hurt them before. Their trick suceeded in drawing Mario out from hiding, but he consequently beat it up. I bet that more types of 'limbs' are possible, such as a machine gun that fires Smorgs, a megaphone in the center of which a group of smorgs would rapidly vibrate to produce devastating sonic waves. Just a theory.

I do not possess an understanding of the last part of your message.
But I get your point. Basically, they are small creatures that live by teaming up to make a bigger one. But I think they are creations of the X-Naut, as everything X-shaped in Paper Mario 2 is related to the X-Nauts in a way or another.

Mario needed to activate the switch to lower a bridge. The smorgs, led by red smorgs (which I think possess a greater inteligence) formed the monster: Red smorgs in the core, and Black ones into seven tentacles, 3 of which are fought. When those 3 are beaten, the black smorgs reform into one large claw. I was suggesting alternate possibilities for such 'limbs'
