I think that the Sports Games are Canon, but some of the Characters aren't! For example, Rosalina in Mario Kart Wii, I seriously doubt she would leave the Comet Observotory and the Baby Luma's even if it was only for a little while! She is a very caring Mother! What kind of Mothers leave babies in Cars("cough.. Mom ..cough"). Eh? Not fantastic ones I'll tell you that! And as for the Baby Characters, like Rosalina, are just thrown in as Fan-service and should not be considered a Canon part of an actuall Sporting Event in the Mushroom Kingdom! I've got an idea for a Thread!

They clearly appear in Mario Super Sluggers as part of the story. Same for Mario Superstar Baseball in Yoshi's storyline. Additionally, they appear for a brief time during the intro of Mario Power Tennis. What is sure is that games like Super Mario Strikers are definitely non-canon because they simply don't fit with the Mario universe.
It is possible that the intro of Mario Tennis 64 and Mario Power Tennis are the only canon elements, considering both show the tournament from the start to the end. And the babies' appearance may just be a cameo.

Considering that Waluigi is considered a canon Mario character and he has only appeared in sports games and spin-offs, at least some part of the sports games has to be real.

Maybe peach is just bad at holding sports tournaments? O.o
I don't really know though as I've only played the second Paper Mario.

Sports games are canon because Luigi mentions them along with the Mario Party games in Paper Mario. Oh yeah, I forgot about that. So they are canon, huh? |

One thing that confuses me is that in the Mario Tennis games, every character has a special cutscene if they beat a tournament. Which one of those is actually real?

Well, in Mario Power Tennis(GCN), Mario & Luigi Win the Tournament by default when Wario, Waluigi and Bowser try to cash the Party! I think we could go by the Cutscenes.

Or none of the cutscenes are actually canon.
After all, going by the theory only the opening scenes are canon, the Peach Dome was mostly destroyed and every spectator escaped. I'm not sure they'd completely reconstruct it, and try to find everyone who escaped, only to show Mario and Luigi won the trophy.
