In SMB3, SMW and YI, there are several levels what have floating platforms on a moving conveyer belt in mid-air as well as lone platforms. On the conveyer belts like the ones in Donut Plains 3 and Cheese Bridge Area, there are also floating fuzzballs. How is it possible for them to just float without nothing holding them up?

I would guess that the bottom half of the platforms is somehow gravitationally repulsive.

Then that explains why a lot of them fall down when Mario stands on them.
One note....WHY are they there?

Because koopas are too cheap to build bridges?

Maybe it's a lot easier than building bridges, especially around some of the crazy terrains.

Ya, that seems like a likely reason. Just look at places like chocolate Island and Butter Bridge, a good portion of the terrain slants steeply and doesn't seem stable at all. There are pipes sticking out of the ground all over dinosaur land and some or really big, wonder how that could have happened? Butter Bridge, one of the only normal bridges in Dino land looks like it's falling apart. The overall terrain of Dino land seems very active in comparison to ours.

Not entirely. Donut Plains is just that: plains in the shape of a donut. It's very flat. Forest of Illusion and Vanilla Dome/Heights seem pretty normal too.

I wouldn't be surprised if some platforms were blown out of place (and then into place somewhere else) by high winds.

Lol, could be. Also, Donut Plains seems to have a very active underground and since the top part is flat, there is no reason to build any bridges there. I just played through the whole game, Start to Bowser's castle, a few days ago and I don't recall seeing any bridges or floating platforms on the Donut plains one stage. 'Course when I got to that stage I got a magic feather and pretty much just flew over the whole thing with Yoshi and at the end I flew up and took the secrete exit. I beat Big boo and took Star road all the way to Bowser's castle and didn't turn back so yea...Donut plains one was all I played of Donut plains >.> The floating platforms in Forest of Illusion don't seem to be functioning as bridges. A lot of them just seem to be sentinel lookout points for Lakitu. Also, a few of them have pipes that some how transport you to a ground pipe. But how is that possible unless the pipe is actually going back into the distance and connecting to the ground at an unseen point? Of course if the pipe dose do that then the platform isn't really floating in mid-air . Don't really like to talk about Vanilla dome >_>, first off it's a big cave. Who tries to build a bridge inside of cave? Second, that one level with all the floating platforms looks like it's outside! What's up with that?! It must be one really huge cave for there to be an area that looks like that. Or was that level actualy outside? O.o

Are you talking about the garden level? Those "stars" are probobly just jewels. And wasn't there a bridge in donut plains? On the overworld?

Yea, there is one bridge on the over-map that crosses the water. Theres also a few ladders leading up out of the water. I wonder if the ladders are just an in-game thing... Either way, those are non-stage-playable and we can't really see if there are floating platforms there; probably there aren't. As for the two stages on the other side of the water, I haven't played them in a while so I'll have to go back and see for sure, but I think one is a foresty like stage with nothing-but floating platforms. And the one next to the castle, I think that is the one were you start out next to the near-invincible yellow koopa isn't it? I think theres also another secrete stage around there.

On a side note, that bridge to get to Castle 2, on the overworld it is just a bridge, but there's just a whole bunch of floating platforms on the level.

There is only one explanation for this and it is the same reason why Mario can jump high and why bricks float, there is low gravity in the Mushroom Kingdom
