I seriously think it's blood I don't have to leave yet

Rex: Could be, I suppose. kingkoopa: Where would he get it all, when has he had a fascination for blood, and you do realize they're E rated games, correct?

How about water with food coloring...Or corn syrup. You know, for the longest time I thought the water on those ship and sub levels from SMB3 was lava until after years of jumping over the stuff I fell in it one day and I was like, "Hey? How am I still alive???"

Reviving a dead topic?! Banish him!
Seriously though, I believe that we have the proof we need in NSMB, like Rex & PDoogan said forever ago.
About the lava on the airships, I like to think that Bowser just probably had the lighting all sinister to make the water look red, but that's just me.

I wouldn't know, but I'll take Meta Black Yoshi's word for it.

It's swimmable, yes, but I've always assumed that was due to the sun and the lava around them reflecting on it.

You know I think I remember one level where there was nowhere to go but the red water, and I saw fish swimming there and coins under there so I jumped in and laughed at the terrible trick Nintendo played on gamers

About the lava on the airships, I like to think that Bowser just probably had the lighting all sinister to make the water look red, but that's just me. In NSMB and NSMB Wii, it is clearly shown that none of the koopalings die as they get back up again and jump back onto the doomship. They seem to do the same in SMB3. As for games where they fall in lava, that is probably just an in-game thing and no-one actually dies in the games probably, especially the koopa kids and Bowser who keep returning. If they are going to return, why does SMW put those messages at the end of the castles what seem to imply that they are dead? Also, what exactly happened to Morton, Roy and Ludwig? They seemed to just shrink or warp out, it is unclear for these three while the others are shown to fall into the lava.

I doubt that anyone died since the koopalings returned in later games, of course Super Mario World could be before those games but that is REALLY unlikely because NSMBWii had Yoshi and a whole bunch of elelments from SMW

Well ever since NSMB it seems even if they fall into lava and die, you can be revived with magic. (Like Bowser in the final battle)

You mean like with 1-up Mushrooms and Life Shrooms reviving the Mario Brothers?
But wouldn't the lava melt them or destroy their body turning them into a skeleton making it impossible to revive them?
Anyway I always thought that this was an in-game thing like those messages at the end of SMW castles.

I don't think lava phases Bowser much. Considering that he has only been turned into a skeleton once, after falling into the lava many times. I think they can protect themselves from lava, but it really weakens them.
