This is used continually in the Mario games, especially in the 2D games and in Super Mario World in particular. In this game, all the koopalings supposedly died in lava except Ludwig, Roy and Morton who I have no idea what happened to them. Yet they all keep coming back. The messages at the end of the castle levels seem to suggest that the koopalings died but they come back in later games. So what actually happened in those castles?

Well, koopa shells are at least partly fireproof. Bowser had his flesh burned off when he fell into the lava in NSMB. He also fell into the lave in SMB and SMB the lost levels but was seen alive and well in later games. Four koopalings fell in the lava in SMW and were seen in later games. In most games mario dies when he falls in the lava, but in SM64 he bounced on the lava. Mushrooms sizzle when they fall into the lava.
My best guess is that the koopalings managed to get out of the lava before the flesh was seared off of they're bones.

Or they're fireproof (closed eyes and nostrils).

Well, even if it's not lava, it is certainly lethal to mario... It's probobly not to farfetched to say that it is extreamly hot as well.
Seems like lava to me...

Maybe they can hide in their shells until a lakitu fishes them out

Perhaps someone used the some spell on them as Jr. used on Bowser in NSMB.

Super cool, yet keeping the liquid form... Possibly through magic.
