Hawkmouth is the gate thing at the end of each level in Super Mario Bros 2. The only one that actually attacks is just before the room to Wart.
Are all the others fake, are they a species, are all of them magically altered, ect.

Well, considering that whole game turned out to be a dream, I think anything is possible without needing much of a logical explanation.

Or Mario dreaming of past events, or the game never happened since it wasn't a Mario game in the first place.

Notwithstanding the game's validity, I think that the Hawkmouths were simply decorative doors. The one before Wart was programmed to destroy.

And also programmed to create a portal to Wart's room no matter where he was when he was beaten.
