There's been some amount of discussion here and there, pictures, fanfiction, relating to the relationship between Mario and Luigi. There are some who believe that they are sworn rivals bent on beating each other and getting more recognition, and even going as far as to write/draw a jealous Luigi murdering Mario. Talk about green with envy. There are others, such as myself, that believe that they love each other and would do anything to support each other. IMHO those who think that Luigi is the Scar of the mushroom kingdom must have never had a sibling. You can only really understand the relationship if you have one yourself, it's one in which you loath your sibling's guts, while at the same time caring for him/her very much. What do you think?

They've never showed anything negative to each other.
Not even in the Paper Mario's.
Case closed.

Luigi is slightly envious of Mario, but only in a private sense. He probably knows that showing outright rivalry would give Bowser something to exploit.

Luigi's jealous, yes, but it's not in his personality to be in the spotlight like Mario. He's naturally shy, so the obvious consequence is that he will be less known. I think he realizes this.

I recall him saying in his diary he just wanted to go on adventures with Mario.
Bonding time and having a blast.

Luigi is not jealous of Mario, he wants to be like him but can't since he is a coward

Luigi is not jealous of Mario, he wants to be like him but can't since he is a coward I guess you could say that. Even in Smash Bros., he tries to imitate Mario but does panicky, one-hit power moves instead of confident combos.

They really need to give him his own moveset in SSBB. Something involving the Poltergust 3000, hopefully.

Personally speaking, I think it's alot about the attention. I think that even though they may not see 'eye to eye' necessarily at times, they both are working together for the "good of the whole" and are always doing something to help out positively. I think Luigi is a bit jealous that his plumper brother gets more attention than him and sometimes he is overshadowed by Mario, but they still have the strongest bond two brothers can have together!

Luigi was one time scared of Toad

I always had a thought that Luigi really has a secret hate of his brother and is jealous of his attention. He secretly has that "The world doesn't revolve around Mario" attitude.

The only time there has been a sibling rivalry is in sports games, party games, and fan-fics on the internet

Luigi probably would like to beat up Mario for taking the spotlight, getting the heroic credit, and getting the girls (especially in Paper Mario. Poor Luigi only gets one girl and it's severey undeveloped love), but is too shy and smart to. He's not a coward, btw. He is scared of ghosts and is frightened easily, however. I am disgusted with the way everyone makes Luigi a complete coward who always just runs away!

I just don't get how Luigi gets trapped in SMG all the time. That could be an in-game element though.

Plus if Luigi didn't get captured that would have been a free power star (or 3)

Bowser's minions find and capture him. Its about time Bowser's minions captured the full set at once. Mario, Luigi, Toad, Peach and Yoshi and anyone else who gets in the way then VICTORY!!! But of course, thats not going to happen.

Bowser simply can't capture them all. He doesn't have the mental capacity to anyways. If he had kept Mario in a dungeon instead of throwing him in a forest at the beginning of Paper Mario, he might have succeeded in taking over. But honestly, who kidnaps only Mario, Luigi, and Toad on a MAGICAL ISLAND, where whoever saves them gets powers. If it was really that easy to get Peach, then why couldn't he have captured her along with the Mario Bros.

Seeing as how Peach wasn't at her castle at the time, Bowser just decided, "Well, I'll come back for her later."
What he didn't count on was Peach actually coming in and putting a stop to his plans.
Plus, at one point, (specifically in M&L 3,) he had technically captured everyone that would pose as a threat to him. That included Mario, Luigi, and Peach.
Besides, wasn't this topic supposed to be about Mario's and Luigi's relationship with each other?
