I don't usually follow Nintendo's maps. I try and make sense of it all by making a map with all the game locations in one map.

I've done a hand-drawn map of the Koopa Kingdom but still editing the Mushroom Kingdom. I haven't played any games recently so a lot of places will be absent. So I'm using Mariopedia to help me with place names and stuff. I used the same place to look for character names for my mario tennis 2 creation.

No I don't play games all day long but I used to play Super NES games quite a lot when I was younger. I sometimes go back to playing Super NES, NES and GBA games on emulators every now and then.
