I agree whole-heartedly, but cheap or not it seems perfectly plausible for the Marioverse. After all, some things in life are just plain boring. :-\

Well, it's not really a critical part of Mario continuity, so I think we've pretty much got free reign over how he came about.

I have a theory that the original koopa kids were created through magic and that each of them embodies a different aspect of Bowser's own personality. After their individual failure, however, Bowser created a clone that embodied all these characteristics in one entity: Bowser Jr.

Um, my thoughts on the Koopa Kids as seen in Bowser's Species:
Bowser and Kamek looking at Bowser's 8 children [ still in eggs ].
Bowser- Make 7 of them older with your magic, leave one of them natural. These 7 kids will fight to the death, except for that one [ points to Bowser Jrs. egg ]. He will stay by my side when he is older. But for now you take care of him.
Kamek- Yes sir.
Kamek magically formed the 7 koopalings older with his magic. Kamek took Bowser Jrs. egg and raised him over the years. Bowser was with them most of the time I geuss.
