Out of all the Mario games, Paper Mario is the only one in which the Mushroom Kingdom has any sort of military units. It seems to me like after all the attacks on them by the Koopa Klan they would have formed some sort of defense force, but so far nothing. I'm thinking that most Mushroom Kingdom citizens have formed some sort of militia as opposed to an actual military.
Sorry this post is so short, I'm really tired. ^_^()

I've always wondered about that. Concsidering the attacks, it is wierd that there is no real defense of the mushroom kingdom. I can attribute it to one or more of four factors. A: Funding has been flooding into the science and Commerce projects, thus freezing the military. B: Peach and/or the chancellor of mushroom are pacifistic, and don't push for any recruitment or organization in general. C: A militray presence may intimidate one or more of their trade partners. D: Perhaps peach is inviting these... But that's another thread.
I'm pushing for all four.

The Kingdom definitely has the resources to create a military, and a formidable one at that. Their modern cities attest to that. I think it's partly because having such a military would give the Kingdom a less peaceful face. And perhaps the citizens are trained in the military arts, to a certain extent, which would create a militia. But have any of you noticed that not even the guards use firearms? Unlike the Koopa Klan, which uses guns and Medieval era weapons, the Mushroom Kingdom only uses spears and the like. Why is such an advanced society so far behind when it comes to military tactics?

Hey, I have a question. What is everybodies stance on SuperScopes? We've seen examples of them used in both Yoshi's Safari as well as Mario&Luigi: Superstar Saga, however in both games they seemed to have qualities of ballistic weaponry as opposed to being energy weapons like they were in Super Smash Bros Melee. So do you think they might be a big part of the Koopa Klan's (or maybe even Mushroom Kingdom's) military, or were they just little cameos?

My theory is that there are multiple versions of the Superscope, just like there are multiple versions of Pistols or Rifles in the real world. So the M&L:SS was a bazooka like-thing (i'm assuming... haven't played ) and the SSBM was a more machine-gun like affair, since huge ballistic weapons would be too imprecise insuch close-quarters combat. I actually would not be surprisedif SS became reguar weapons of the Marioverse. But as it is now, they are just cameos.

Hmm. Since it wouldn't make sense for the nations of Mushroom earth not to adopt the Super Scope as a part of their armies, I think it must be a really rare weapon, or one that is extremely hard and/or expensive to produce.

I was thinking the same thing. I for one am just surprised that the royal guards of the Mushroom Kingdom and/or the Mario Bros. don't use them more often as rare as they may be. Because it's obvious that Mario is in possession of one. Then again, maybe he ran out of ammo permanently?

Yeah, being a rare weapon, there probably isn't much ammo floating around. Maybe we'll see him with it again, and then we can assume he found some.

In any case, it seems as though the Marioverse does contain firearms in some shape or form.

Maybe the governments just haven't recognized their potential.

Fairly slow moving missles and cannons is as much fire arms as can be.

There is an army, but we don't see them much because they aren't important to gameplay and story.

That's a good point. Maybe there is a lot more to the military than we see. Of course, I'd think they'd use this military a bit more if they had it.

The MK's military dosen't need to be shown much, considering the Mario Bros. do most of the work protecting the kingdom.

Yeah. What's the most violence from a good guy that we've seen in a standard Mario game? Probably the Super Scope.

Mario's fireballs, Grodus, the Shadow Queen, birdos, hammer bros, those spikey spillars in SMW, Navel Piranha, the Koopalings and Bowser falling into lava, Bowser when he comes out of the lava as a skeleton in NSMB, the bullet bills on Pinna Parks beach, piranha plants, chain chomps, most of the bosses from Wario Land, ect.
The Kingdoms never really had a full scale invasion since SMB, and Mario's usually away from the Kingdom in most games, he goes to where all the action is, or the action comes to him.

Would NSMB count as a full-blown invasion? Where did NSMB take place, anyway?

I always thought it took place in the same place as SMB3 most of the worlds are the same and in the same order too. You have to remember though, what we see as an "invasion" may just be portrayed by a bunch of enemys in the game. The Mushroom Kingdom probably doesn't have that many baddies running around normally.
