It's just because it's a kids game. Although I can't really see Mario brutally murdering some little turtle. they probably just get knocked out or something. In Yoshi's Island, when you step on a goomba, they don't die, but get really flat and pop up again in a few seconds. That could be an explanation too.

I don't remember any Goombas in Yoshi's Island.
I agree that they get knocked out or something, cause they always come back when you re-enter the area.

When enimies in about every gamedie they disappear in smoke or vanish. In game thing or what? Not really, if you kick koopa shells at enemies they just flip upsidedown and fall off the screen

Well then how do we explain that too?

Anything "falling off the screen" can be explained by saying there's a sheer cliff there. Unlikely, but simple.

I think we can explain "falling off" as simply "falling down"--the enemy simply collapses on the ground, even though the game doesn't show this. It's like what happens to dead enemies in first-person shooters. The enemy's body fades away, but the player's not supposed to interpret this literally.

Yeah, just to avoid the screen filling up.

So does everyone agree that the "falling off the screen" thing is an out of universe occurrence? (Meaning, in universe, something different than what we see occurs.)

I suppose that the enemy disappearing could just be like a biological thing. Likw when Goombas die, their bodies decompose very, VERY quickly.

Well, I think we decided that the disappearing corpses was just an out-of-universe thing. However, I guess you could have a point about Goombas. They seem to flatten out and merge with the ground when stomped, so maybe your theory is correct.
What does everyone else think?

They seem to be incrediably elastic - the ones in YI could regain their original form.

They could compress themselves, like mice or rats when they slip under doors.
