I'm wondering why the former Goomba King changed his name to Goomboss, and why he now lives in a thick wooded area instead of a castle on the main route between Goomba Village and Toad Town. Did his defeat at the hands of Mario really mean the end of his kingship? Maybe he felt so humilated after his loss that he felt he needed to relocate to another area and change his name. Maybe he felt he would get more respect in an area where his defeat was unknown.

Probably. But he did find followers in this new area. I don't know whether these guys were just loyal or oblivious to his defeat. I guess we'd have to know how well news spreads in the Goomba community.

Mabey Goomboss isn't the same guy from SM64DS. He might be the king of that wooded area, and the Goomba King is still by Goomba Road. Goombas seem to be around forest type areas more frequently. And how could you guys start a thread without me!?!  |

Well, we just couldn't seem to find you  . But anyway, maybe Goomboss was the original and Goomba King was a normal goomba who became jealous of his power? After all, Bowser did mention that Goomba King was just a normal goomba that he had changed with the Star Rod, didn't he? |

Hmm right...
We need to pay more attention to the stories in Paper Mario.
Now, Goomboss came fist if were gonna accept that the stuff added in M64DS happened. Paper Mario came after the M64 venture so the Goomba King could still be Goomboss.
The stuff in M64DS came first and Paper Mario second.

Right. BUt as far as I know, by the time SM64DS happened Bowser hadn't stolen the Star Rod yet. Thus, Goomboss must have existed before Goomba King.

I'd have to say no to both. Bowser states in Paper Mario that he used to Star Rod to make Goomba King the leader of the goombas, which leads me to believe that he was originally just a normal ol' goomba himself. However, since Goomboss appears in SM64DS before Paper Mario occurs , I don't see how they could be the same character since Bowser hadn't stolen the Star Rod yet.

You're right, I could be wrong. I know for a fact that Bowser states he gave Goomba King the status he had, I just can't remember whether he used the Star Rod to do it or not. If he did, then my previous theory stands. If he did it by his own means, however, then it's possible he made Goomba King/Goomboss what he is during or before SM64DS.

It would make sense for him to begin as merely Goomboss and become Goomba King later. This hinges on two things though: SM64DS happening before PM, and Bowser bestowing kingship upon him without the help of the Star Rod.
