I think a hammer and a baseball bat would probably be about the same weight. The only difference is that hammers seem to weigh more because they're more top-heavy.
As for seeing them do it in different games, it's shown all the time in Paper Mario (for those of you who consider it canon). There have been many different occasions when we see Goombella hold a book in front of her with no help at all.

Yes. Magnetic Books. That makes sense. [/sarcasm] Seriously, how often do you see a book with a piece of metal in it? It doesn't make much sense. However, seeing as magic is possible, psychokinetic powers seem to make more sense.
