think out side the box, man. This is the Mushroom kingdom we're talking about here, virtually anything can happen. Besides in the forever forest the trees had diffrent faces, piranah plants also have diffrent faces, thus contradicting your statement

Just a theory. Plus Pirahna Plants don't have faces.

Their basic structure:
Piranha plants, spotted ball with a mouth Pokeys, spiked ball head, eyes, and a mouth.
The same types look similar to each other. Just a color and personality differentiation.

Yeah but they're based off two entirely different plants. Pokey's design is that of a cactus and piranha plants are modeled after the venus fly trap.

I like Toomai's idea. The Forest of Illusion trees and the Pokeys look similar because they're of related species of plants. The piranha plants look different because they are of a different species of plant. As for the ghouls part, perhaps they've just been possessed by ghosts, which is what motivates them to be hostile.

So, if they wern't possessed, they'd go about thier own business?

If they wernt possessed, they'd be regular cactuses.

Actually, wouldn't they simply be harmless (but still living)?

in a technical sense yes, because they are plants, but no, if tattling states they are possessed they are objects

You can possess a living being, as we all know from M&L:SS.

considering we see no normal pokey's and drydry is litterd with cacti that is not a pokey,I'd say pokey's arn't animate objects

Perhaps the Pokey and the spirit have a symbiotic relationship. Maybe the Pokey is normally too docile to survive for a very long time while the spirit needs a host with tough natural defenses. If so, the Pokey and the ghost would be a perfect match.

Is the platform over the lava pit in Bowser's old castle a wide bridge or does it stretch all the way across the sides of the room?

Can you either define "old" or post a pic?

Ah, that. It could very well be a bridge, as it would help constrain Mario to two dimensions. Going from the front wall to the back wall (essentially, a floor) wouldn't make much sense, other than to hold Bowser's mass.

I always imagined it as a narrow bridge. Makes the battle a little more exciting.

It would need to be pretty well made to support Bowser, yet easy enough to get broken apart.
