Oh, okay. I just assumed there were--it's been awhile since I last played the game.
Maybe the axe is so heavy that when it falls on the bridge its weight breaks the bridge?

If it was that heavy Mario wouldn't be able to move it.

Maybe it was supposed to be a trap set for Mario. For example, Mario defeats the Bowser clone in the castle and thinks he's won, so he sees the shiny, golden axe and reaches for it, thinking that it's a piece of treasure. Then BAM! The bridge collapses and Mario falls in the lava.

Except the axe is on the platform elevated from the bridge.

Could it just be a switch that disengages the bridge that looks like an axe?

This might have been said already, but maybe the axe was tremendously heavy, so much so that when it was dropped onto the bridge, the bridge collapsed.

If it was that heavy Mario wound't be able to move it and/or Bowser and Mario's combined weight would be too much for the bridge.

Well, it looked to be standing on its handle, so in that case it would be very easy to tip over.

The lava bubbles or podoboos have had eyes sometimes. What really are they? And I notcied the name, podo BOO. Could they be a ghost inhabited like thwomps? We might as well explain the other fire charecters.

Actually, it looks like Nintendo stopped calling them Podoboos before PM1, as in that game they were "Lava Bubbles".
