So, I've been working on a Paper Mario idea for a while, and I kept coming up with ideas that simply wouldn't fit into my story without seeming forced. I've gathered all these ideas together and decided that they'd make for an excellent sequel to Super Paper Mario. It's at least something to think about while my other, more fleshed-out PM idea is in the works.
Basic Premise
The story this time around would take place in... well, let's call it "Neverland." Neverland's entire history is magically contained within the eponymous Eternal Book, and so everything that has happened and will happen is already foretold. Well, some evil guy in Neverland found the book and literally erased the future outlined in the book, hoping to rewrite the future with him as its overlord. Luckily, the eight authors of the book were able to wrestle it from his grasp, but in the process lost their memories and the book; now, the future can't occur in Neverland because it is no longer written.
So, of course, it ends up at Mario's doorstep, along with a native Neverland Goomba (Mario's first partner - no Pixls!), who managed to find the Book and came to the Mushroom Kingdom to find help from its renowned hero. Mario must travel to Neverland and find the eight authors of the Book so that their memories can be restored and the Book's future Chapters can be rewritten.
Gameplay Hook
Super Paper Mario's theme was dimensions, and so its main gimmick was allowing Mario to flip between 2D and 3D. This game's gimmick is the Eternal Book itself. You, the player, would possess the Book in the form of the Wii U GamePad. Paper Mario games are often split into "Chapters," and in this game, each one is literally a "Chapter" occurring within the Book.
At pivotal moments in the story, Mario will have to make decisions; now, in real life, once you've made a decision, you can't go back. In this game, however, every decision you make will be recorded in the Book as another "Page." Mario can flip back through Pages and re-enter points in the story where a crucial decision has been made, or where a pivotal event has occurred.
Going back in time doesn't erase the timeline, though; it instead creates an alternate timeline. This way, Mario can travel back and forth between timelines ("Pages") and thus gather information that would normally be inaccessible if a different event or decision had occurred.
For instance, let's say one Chapter revolves around a town at the foot of a giant dam. Your first time though, you travel to the top of the dam to perform some kind of task; however, upon reaching the top, Mario learns that there are cracks in the dam. It's too late, though; it bursts and destroys the town in a flood. Using the Eternal Book, you flip back through the Pages of time and restart at the point where you first entered town. In this timeline where you climbed the dam, you'd do some scouting around and find out what is causing the dam to break and use that knowledge in a different timeline (started when you re-entered town) to warn the citizens and allow them to repair its walls before it's too late.
Or something like that. The game's Chapters need to be rewritten by the Book's original authors (who I suppose would be Merlon-like sages), so finding the sage in the Prologue would grant you access to Chapter 1, finding the one in Chapter 1 would allow you to start Chapter 2, etc.
And, of course, Princess Peach and Bowser would somehow get roped into the story. Just because it's kind of a thing that needs to be a thing.
Soooo... yeah. This is just a rough gist, but I'll probably come back here and edit/add more information as I think of it. What do y'all think?
