The Koopa Tribe is an interesting case. They have a particular society, economy, technology, and history.
Let's start with Super Mario Bros. In it, the Koopa Tribe lived in the neightboring Koopa Kingdom but decided to invade the Mushroom Kingdom one day. They possess very strong magic, and used it to win the war against the Mushroom Kingdom, which (or at least a part of it) became a dry wasteland. Then they transformed every inhabitant of the kingdom into Brick Blocks. Note that down: they didn't kill anyone, just made sure the previous populace wouldn't take room or be able to resist. The only persons they ever tried to murder were Mario and Luigi. It should also be noted that the kingdom's vegetation disappeared in places: is it because of the Koopas' magic ? Maybe they tried ruining the kingdom to make its inhabitants starve and surrender, but it didn't work so they transformed them into blocks.
Anyway, here, Bowser, the king of the Koopa Kingdom, kidnaps Princess Peach and takes residence in a far away castle, to make sure she wouldn't use her own magic to restore the kingdom.
Then, Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels. The kingdom became ruined yet again, but Bowser only kidnapped Peach this time, alongside a few Toads. It's likely the Koopa Tribe took over the kingdom in a single night, which means they're really strong and the kingdom's in serious danger everytime Mario's sleeping. They even had time to change the kingdom's geography a bit to make it an epicly dangerous place if anyone tried getting to Bowser's castle. Mario saves the kingdom again, yadda yadda.
Super Mario Bros. 3 is where it lifts off. We learn Bowser has 7 children, who are causing problems at several kingdoms, overthrowing them with ridiculous ease. Here is when we learn the Koopa Tribe doesn't only have extremely good magic, but also extremely destructive weapons: tanks, battleships, flying battleships... However, most of these weapons are made out of wood, strangely enough, although they use a mechanical system to fly. This is decent technology made using "old" material. So it's a possibility the Koopa Kingdom has economic problems and can't use better material, explaining why they'd take over another land. But why did Bowser's children take over 7 lands ? Only so that Bowser could kidnap Peach behind the scenes and bring her to his real castle. The name of the island the castle's on is unknown (Dark Land in the English version) but it can be assumed to be the Koopa Kingdom. It's a big rugged wasteland of forgotten skeletons, volcanoes, hot lakes and areas where sunlight (or moonlight) is completely blocked. No wonder the Koopa Tribe wanted to quit that area. But Bowser is beaten again, alongside his army.
Super Mario World. After his previous defeat, Bowser and his troops used their last airship to move to somewhere else or simply take vacations: either way, the ship crashed in the sea of Dino Land, a nice and lush place that is barely inhabited, and it gave the tribe the idea to take over the location while nobody was looking. You have to be sorry for them at this point: they have all the cards in hand to be a very rich people living in a peaceful society but they live in an awful place and destiny is against them constantly. Anyway, so they take over the land, including Yoshi's Island (Yoster Island), which is the only inhabited place really. Then they create an HQ underground, to make sure they aren't found if anyone tries to restore the place. Sadly for them, the Mario Bros. and Peach took a vacation on Dino Land soon after, and that stupid Bowser (who's just in love with Peach at this point) couldn't resist kidnapping the princess - does he want to rule his new empire with her on his side ? Mario and Luigi save the Yoshis, find Bowser's valley, and murder the whole Koopa tribe then kick Bowser out of the place, for the third time. Also note the Koopa Clown Car, which is the highest piece of technology seen yet.
Super Mario Kart rolls in. Bowser, although being a terrorist, is invited to participate to the racing tournament. One could assume he's the one who asked to be part of it, and swore to not cause any troubles in the name of his nation. Maybe he just wants to fight with Mario. Yep, the number 1 most hated man in the Koopa Kingdom is what Bowser sees as a rival. Maybe he realized he also liked Peach. Since this game, it's been made clear the Mushroom Kingdom, and Marioi's planet as a whole, isn't some medieval place and actually has the same technology as us, although maybe a bit more advanced.
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. Here, we learn the Koopa Tribe still lived in "Dark Land" dozens of years ago, but Bowser's Castle got destroyed. Also, there's a secret path through a volcano linking the Koopa Kingdom and Yoshi's Island (Yoshi Island).
Yoshi's Safari ! Here, the Koopa Tribe tries taking over the Jewelry Kingdom, and manage to. They then split it into two realms to run away from troubles. They seem to know they shouldn't attack the Mushroom Kingdom anytime soon, Mario's in there after all. Also, epic technology in there - the Koopa Tribe is now making war robots, and Bowser got himself a battle armor ! They're really advanced, as the standard level of technology is cars apparently for everywhere else in the world. If the planet is in the 90's or the 2000's, the Koopa Tribe is at least in the 2010's or 2020's.
Super Mario RPG, it's the only one just for me. In this game, NO MORE KOOPA KINGDOM. Bowser lives in the Mushroom Kingdom and has his castle there. One can assume he managed to be allowed to possess a piece of land, or maybe the population is too scared of him to kick him out and Mario doesn't see a reason to kick him out yet. Ironically, the Koopa Tribe now lives next to Mario's house. The Koopa Kingdom likely collapsed, or Bowser decided it would stop existing as a country because it sucks anyway. But now that the Koopa Tribe managed to live in a decent place, Bowser has his own selfish plan now: marry Peach and become the kingdom's king. And troll Mario. He kidnaps Peach and fights with Mario but the battle is stopped short and the Smithy Gang takes over Bowser's Castle AND army. Now Bowser is mad and wants his people, and home, back. He gets it back, but then moves the castle to somewhere else in the kingdom, likely to avoid getting banned from it as he did try to kidnap Peach again. Oh, about the technology: the Koopa Tribe created a giant war robot to... stomp flowers. They created a giant war robot for Bowser to have sadistic fun. Makes you wonder what can they actually make if they were being serious.
Super Mario 64. Now that his people's problems are fixed, Bowser directly goes to the point: he goes in Peach's castle, steal the castle's Power Stars and use them to create pieces of land filled with danger themed after the castle's paintings, before sealing Peach and the Toads in the castle's walls and hiding the stars in the worlds he created. All he does is causing problems and making sure Peach doesn't run away. Oh, and mocking Mario. He gets his tails kicked. Here, the tribe makes use of a submarine to move, yet Bowser shows his magic as he can teleport. Yeah, it's pretty clear by now the Koopa Tribe has high control of magic, but also of technology.
Mario Kart 64. Bowser's Castle is in the middle of a lava sea ? They really don't want to get caught if they do something bad. At least they ARE part of the kingdom now. Also, the castle has an imprisoned Thwomp. The Koopa Tribe isn't cruel, just able to do mass attacks, so that Thwomp is likely there for a reason. So we know that, in their society, they do punish people who don't follow the rules (but not in a gruesome way either).
Wrecking Crew '98. While Mario was away for vacations, Bowser managed to construct several buildings in the Mushroom Kingdom. That must have needed a lot of money. But the one helping in the construction is Spike Foreman, who hates Mario. Maybe that Spike possesses his own construction company, and helps the Koopa Tribe by giving them construction material, in hope they manage to defeat Mario ?
Paper Mario. The second biggest terrorist attack the tribe has done since Super Mario Bros. They literraly overthrown Peach's castle, they imprisoned the people in it for the sake of it, they caused chaos and despair and Bowser directly made so that wishes that aren't his wouldn't be granted anymore in the world. The Koopa Tribe is vengeful against the Mushroom Kingdom, likely because of how they "weren't accepted" by the inhabitants in SMB. And, because they have massive power, they went to the extreme. You can't be sad for them anymore now, only angry and ashamed at their acts. They even manage to beat Mario. Bowser became all-mighty, and according to the Star Spirits he's starting to "want more" than just the kingdom and Peach. This matter is serious. But Bowser gets beaten once again by Mario, thankfully. Technology-wise, Bowser's Castle is amazing. It has a cyclic lava flow for the heck of looking good, and the castle itself could be launched to the stratosphere. They also got a machine that generates cloud, and Kammy made the very first exemple of magitek in the Mario world: technology and magic together ; a machine that powered up Bowser even more.
The tribe has lots of weapons, and it must have needed money to create such a castle, so it's likely their economy got better. Maybe the Mario Kart, Golf and Tennis events gave the kingdom a lot of money and the Koopa Tribe got its share ?
In the end, the kingdom believed Bowser got his lesson and wouldn't be back again.
Super Mario Sunshine. Bowser being selfish again: this time he just wants to trick his 8th child into thinking Peach's the mother and Mario's the bad guy. But because the Koopa Tribe is too strong to control itself, it ended up in Delfino Isle being ruined, Mario going to jail, and a gigantic mech being used just to destroy Mario. Um.
Here, take HIGH NOTE of FLUDD and the Magic Paintbrush. Both are made by E. Gadd. Very high technology. Maybe the Koopa Tribe got bested, here.
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga shows the tribe has a giant flying battleship. Not made out of wood. Seems like the economy did get better, or Bowser decided a single, strong battleship was better than a bunch of lousy battleships. Also, Bowser has two castles in this one: a flying one and a ground-based one. The Koopa Cruiser, Ground Castle and Air Castle each had their share of Koopa soldiers too, so maybe each game didn't show the whole army. Oh, and the Cruiser's destroyed. And the tribe didn't finish paying it. They needed outside help to construct it ? Well they don't have factories after all, and their economy is likely not at its best at this point.
Also, Tolstar recognizes Bowser as "the most famous monster king in the world". It seems that Bowser (and likely the Koopa Tribe too) got themselves a nice reputation in the world, probably because they did manage to take over lands (the MK twice, the 7 kingdoms of the Mushroom World, Dino Land and Jewelry Land). Also, it hints there are other "monster" communities in the world.
I'll continue later (being yelled at by parents because I'm not watching TV with them, ugh). But here's a recap: as of Superstar Saga, what we know of the Koopa Tribe is that it lived for long in a wasteland, and tried going to a new land. They have a lot of magic power and they have develloped very high technology but their economy and society can't grow bigger because of how lousy their kingdom is, so the only way they can move to a better place is by launching violent attacks on other countries and trying to take the populaton's place (without causing death either - they're very powerful and can't limit themselves, but they're not cruel either). Until they managed to live in the Mushroom Kingdom. But Bowser got a crush on Peach and tried kidnapping her several times. Meanwhile, the tribe seems to get better, but they choose to isolate themselves to avoid being banned. However, the biggest plan was in Paper Mario, where it had a major impact on the whole planet. Bowser became even more selfish after that and started to want more...
