I've been thinking about the RPG Mario games repeatedly as of late, and have been pondering their future...
After Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story was released, I decided that I didn't want anymore M&L titles. I thought that a trilogy was good enough, and that they should just leave the M&L series alone after that (at least for awhile).
Now that I've caught wind of the upcoming Paper Mario 3DS, I find myself thinking the same exact thing. Three solid games is good (I don't count Super Paper Mario as a legitimate entry in the PM series) and there should be no more made for a long time.
That just leaves Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, a game that tons of fans have wanted a true sequel to for the longest time.
After much deliberation, I've come to a conclusion: I don't want a sequel to SMRPG.
It's one of my favorite all-time Mario games, and I know it sounds crazy. But, I just don't think that a sequel should be made. As good as Nintendo and Square Enix are, I don't think it would ever live up to my expectations.
Here's what I think. I think that Nintendo should stop adding installments to the existing Mario RPG lines (at least for awhile) and create an all-new Mario RPG title that's unrelated to any of the other ones. I think the Mario RPGs need a fresh new start, with a different developer and style. I think that all of the RPGs are excellent games in their own right, but I'm ready for a change.
My choice for the new developer: Bioware.

An all-new one.
SMRPG is probably never getting a sequel, and I wouldn't care about it anyway, M&L seems to be on a downward slope of quality, and I'd hate to see it get worse from here, and Paper Mario is perfectly fine as it is.
Imagine what they could do without the limitations attached to being part of the other series.

All new. For reasons stated above.
Even though every single Mario RPG has a very special place in my heart, (especially Thousand Year Door,) I'd seriously love it if we had an all new series to look forward to.

Any ideas for a developer?
Like I said, I'm throwing my hat in with Bioware. They've never made a bad game, and I thoroughly enjoyed Sonic Chronicles on the DS.

I don't think Bioware is very well suited for a Mario RPG.
What a Mario RPG does not need is over complication and Darker and Edgier-ness.

Have you played Sonic Chronicles? It retained the series' tone (albeit with a better story and writing), was very simple and straight-forward, and had a fun and fast-paced combat system that kept you constantly involved. It was also much more like a standard turn-based RPG, as opposed to their other games.
But, anyway, who do you feel should develop it?

Who's responsible for the Paper Mario games? Intelligent Systems. ...I find it funny how I know this right off the top of my head...

every single Mario RPG has a very special place in my heart, (especially Thousand Year Door,) Quoted For Truth. I want an entirely new one, no connections to others, and most importantly: Bowser as the main villain. Now, I thought Smithy/Shroobs/Shadow Queen/Count Bleck/Dimentio/Cackletta/Fawful were all great villains, but Bowser needs a chance in the spotlight again. As for developers: Can Retro do to Mario RPGs what they did to Donkey Kong Country?

kingkoopaI thought it was awesome. But, to each his own, I suppose. What specifically didn't you like about it?

A Mario & Luigi sequel. It is hinted in Mario & Luigi 3, and it makes sense anyway.
But then there should be a third RPG series, which could be a mix of the Paper Mario series and the Mario & Luigi series (as in, the best parts of one's gameplay, the best parts of the other's gameplay, and an new art style - maybe closer to the main series' ?).

Best parts?
Meaning more in-depth action commands from M&L and maybe partners or ancient artifacts from PM?
I like that.

A story like the PM series' (which starts all happy, gets more epic in the middle of the game, and ends seriously), the Mario & Luigi system is still there, and-
... Screw that, I don't want a new Mario RPG series.

I wouldn't want them to develop the RPG with the concept of "take certain mechanics from the other two series and throw them into a blender". Both of them are waaay too simple, in the gameplay department.
Here's what I'd want: - 3 to 4 party members in battle at once. - More intuitive action commands (that almost play out like quick-timed events) - Luigi as a party member - Bowser as a villain for a large chunk of the game, only to have him join your party near the end to defeat the greater evil - 3D graphics that look more like the main series. I'm starting to get tired of all the RPGs being in flat, 2D all of the time.

Technically 2.5D, but you get the point.

I'd like to see another RPG where Bowser is the villain for the entire game.

Bowser isn't even evil. Having him being the villain in every main series game is enough.
Although it would be interesting if he's, like, a serious villain for a whole game, until you learn that the true villain was controlling his mind, and you have to battle the true villain. Kind of like what happens to King Dedede in Kirby's Dreamland 2.

@ The_Cat I think Bowser gets enough spotlight as the main villain in almost all of the other games, though. Besides, in the current games, I don't think his personality is evil enough to be taken seriously as a primary villain (at least, not anymore). If Bowser were to be the main villain again, they'd have to completly retool his personality, which certainly wouldn't be a bad thing.
EDIT: Whoa, Koopalmier! We're totally on the same wave-length right now!
