Well, as many of you have seen my Mario Timeline, I assume you know that I place Mario as being born in 1981, as does Koopalmier(to the best of my memory). And because of this, and the fact that Nintendo will probably NEVER quit making Mario games, we will eventually have to explain why he hasn't aged. I mean, think about it, Mario will be 30 next year, and it's understandable that he could still be adventuring... But what about when he turns 80 and hasn't aged a bit. We really need to start working on solutions now.

Well, first, the series obviously doesn't follow real time, or else Mario was 1 at the time of Donkey Kong's events.
Look at my timeline (which I'll update in a few minutes - I now see most Mario games as being canon). Mario was an adolescent in Donkey Kong GB and wasn't an adult until Super Mario Bros. (which is also when the series actually started). Well, in my theory at least. And it'll be difficult to find an actual solution. Everything we can throw can only be theories (that could go as ridiculous as "Mario doesn't age due to 1UP Mushrooms" or "Humans on Mario's planet may age differently"... or "Mario and DK were adolescent during the events of DK94) until Nintendo confirms anything. I wish I knew how to send an e-mail to them, but I don't.

In my Timeline, Super Mario Bros. happens in 1999, when Mario is an adult. It also correlates to the release of Super Mario Bros. Deluxe on the Game Boy Color.

You do know that, in Japan, you hit majority at 21, right ? We shouldn't forget the series is Japanese. Even if it doesn't relate to a particular culture, when it does it's Japanese culture (i.e. tea being the main drink instead of coffee, people driving to the left instead of driving to the right, etc. although that also sticks to the British culture, but still).

...So? That doesn't change anything. I mean, he still ages just like Humans.

Well, who ever said that each Mario game happened a year after the previous one? For all we know, the original, Super Mario Bros 3, and Super Mario World could have all happened in the timespan of one year. Unless of course we have some sort of proof that states otherwise.

I'm saying that he's not an adult until he's 21. (... well, maybe)

I'm not rude. These ARE ridiculous. The whole idea of there being logic in Mario isn't very bright either, but thinking that a cartoon world's logic that wasn't touched upon is different from our's - without any proof, with that - is just ridiculous. Although the idea that Mario was as old as DK Jr. in DK Game Boy, or that Yoshi Island and Yoster Island are different locations, is quite laughable too.

Well there's technically two time lines going on here. Mario couldn't have been born in 1981, Mario was CREATED in 1981. After all, he didn't fight Donkey Kong as a baby The way I see it, of you count the original Donkey Kong as the start of his adventures, I would say he was a minimum of 20 when it took place. So, with a little math, we can see that DK took place 29 years ago plus 20 equals....49? Yeah, a little on the old side, but nothing totally unreasonable.

Wait, are you guys actually taking Mario's real-life age as a basis for what his age is today. His real-life age has nothing to do with his age in the games.

PDooganBased on my Timeline, Mario & Luigi's births took place in 1981. Then, in 1998, Mario got a job(whether part-time, or full) at a local Constructian Site. Then in 1999 the events of Mario Bros. takes place(in Toad Town Sewers), followed immediately by Super Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros.:The Lost Levels, and finally Super Mario Bros. 2, all in '99. See what I mean now? kingkoopaWell, according to my Timeline, most of the games take place in the same year; I mean, most of his games take place over a span of 9 Years, with the DKC games being placed towards the end. But the problem I'm having is that, 50 years from now, we'll need an explanation for why Mario hasn't aged, or what about 100 years? This not a bad thing in any way, as I plan on playing new Mario games till the day I die, but the Theorist inside me realizes the continuity screw up that I need to confront. That's what this Thread is about.

@ Koopalmier You wanna know what's ridiculous? Trying to make a set timeline and continuity out of the Mario series. Yet, here we all are...

Well, I guess if none of the Popeye or Mickey Mouse continuity fans care about their character not aging, I guess we shouldn't either.

If he was born in 1981, it would be near-impossible to cram all the events of all the games into his lifetime. If something like SMW takes about 2 months (remember he's got to travel around a whole continent), then that would mean Mario is almost constantly on the move. Not to mention that most of the sports tournaments would play out over a few weeks. Also, I find it hard to believe that Mario is only 8 years older than me

Yes. Because it's entirely theorical and doesn't rest on anything. PDoogan : Dino Land isn't a big continent. It's only a big island. The game shows you when it's night time and day time (in the background of levels) so following that it took him 5 days. Donald Duck's universe has a complete timeline and the characters are aging. Mickey Mouse's universe isn't full enough to deserve a timeline or any kind of actual logic. Mario's universe is closer to Donald's than to Mickey's. Get ready to get your mind blowed: the Cranky Kong in Donkey Kong Country Returns is the Donkey Kong of Donkey Kong Country, according to the instruction manual. It's not a translation error or a bit added by NoA, considering Retro is an American develloper. Well, that's not exactly a problem. DKCR could very well happen in the future, and the DK we'll see in Mario Sports Mix and other Mario games can still be DKC Donkey. But if they make a DKCR reference in a Mario game featuring Donkey, we're going to have serious problems.

KoopalmierCan I see a quote? It's not that I don't believe you, I just can't find any scans, and I'd like to examine it myself. PDooganI did. EpicGyllynns Timeline, Part 1: 1957 - Kamek, Toadsworth, (Cranky)Donkey Kong & (the Original)Yoshi are born. 1979 - Bowser & (Modern)Yoshi are born. 1981- Mario & Luigi are born. The events of "Yoshi's Island" take place. Wario & Waluigi are also born. 1982- Peach & Daisy are born. 1984-Shroob Invasion begins, and the events of "Mario & Luigi:PiT (Past)" takes place. 1985- Bowser traps Yoshi's Island in a Picture Book. 1992- Mario's family moves to Mushroom City, so the Bros. can have a better education. DK(Jr.) is born. 1998- Mario meets Pauline. The Mario's get temporary jobs as Construction Workers. One day, when Mario brought Pauline to work, a crazed Kong escaped from the Zoo and carried her to the top of the Skyscraper that was under construction. Mario, was forced to climb steel girders and dodge rolling Barrels to rescue the Damsel-in-distress. After being re-captured by Mario, Cranky was going to be sent back to the Mushroom City Zoo, but his son managed to save him and they both returned to DK Isles. These "events" cost Mario his job, and Luigi wouldn't abandon his brother, so after a failed attempt as a Wrecking Crew, they founded Mario Bros. Plumbing. Mario and Pauline split-up for unknown reasons! 1999- The Mario Bros. get hired to do some standard maintenance in Toad Town sewers, when strange creatures began to attack them! Meanwhile, on the surface, Bowser had launched his first Invasion of the Mushroom Kingdom, destroying Toad Town, kidnapping the Princess, and turning most of the Kingdoms inhabitants into statues! When the Plumbers returned to the surface they found the city in Ruins, luckily one of the surviving Toads told them what had happened and the Super Mario Bros. first, legendary Journey began. Unfortunately, the Koopa King doesn't give up easy and he quickly launched a Counter-Attack... Only to be thwarted yet again! Later that year, Mario, Luigi and their New Friends(Princess Peach and Toad) help liberate SubCon from the oppressive Wart. The Subconians make Mario and his friends believe it was a dream. Toad Town reconstruction begins. 2000- Bowser lures the Brothers away from Princess Peach's Castle by attacking the eastern part of the Kingdom, with the Help of his Seven Koopalings! While on their Adventure, Bowser kidnapped the Princess yet again, and the Plumbers where forced to face the Koopa King in Dark Land. After being rescued AGAIN, the Princess decided that she and the Brothers should take a, well deserved, Vacation to Dinosaur Land. However, the Princess is captured AGAIN, and Bowser is defeated AGAIN. Toad Town reconstruction is finished. 2001- They finish their Vacation, and when they return Peach buy's the Mario Brothers an Island(Appropriately titled "Mario Land"), and Mario(Not Luigi!) is sent to rescue the ruler of Neighboring Kingdom of Sarrasaland, Princess Daisy, from Tatanga. He returns to his Isle to find that Luigi has been given the boot, and their castle was captured by Wario! Mario is forced to find the 6 Golden Coins that Wario, foolishly, hid outside the Castle. Wario is defeated and goes on his own quest for Treasure, leading him to Kitchen Island. Smithy's Gang invades Amana(The Mushroom World) and the Star Road(A bridge between Star Haven and Amana) is broken into Seven Shards. Mario, Geno(A Star Kid), Mallow(The Prince of the Nimbus Kingdom), Princess Peach and, for the first time, Bowser, must team up to defeat Smithy and rebuild Star Road. Bowser learns of Star Haven and begins plotting. Later this year, the first Mario Kart Races(Named after Mario & Luigi's heroics) are held. Mario sells his Island. 2002- Princess Peach invites Mario to her castle to share a Cake, but Bowser steals the Power Stars that protect Peach's Castle, he seals them inside the Paintings hung throughout the castle and even holds the Princess hostage! Mario managed to recover all 120 Power Stars, and he defeats the Koopa King once again. Mario and Co. have a party to decide who is the Superstar, and the second Mario Kart(64) Races are held. ...Now I just have to find the Second half. @2257 Haha... So true... lol!

Here are my thoughts: Mario and all of his friends are timeless characters, and should never really be given a set age. I have no problem with them not aging.
Sure, I like trying to put the games in a sequential order. But, trying to figure out the ages of all of the characters is impossible and ultimately pointless, in my opinion.
As kingkoopa said, Mickey Mouse and Popeye don't seem to ever age and it never bothers anyone. Why can't the same be said about Mario?

I know he never needs to age, but Mickey Mouse and Popeye don't have theorist(well, at least not to my knowledge), but we, as Mario theorist, must develop a solution for this enigma.
