Okay, so Super Mario 64 Introduced Power Stars, inanimate Objects of Immense Power. Then Paper Mario introduced Star Kids, and Star Spirits. Easy enough. Then Sunshine brought Shine Sprites into the picture! And if thats not confusing enough, Galaxy showed us the Luma, a Race of Beings who Mature into Matter(But, Canonically Speaking, I assume they turn into Stars and other Celestial Bodies, possibly even Power Stars, unlike the Transformations that the Game depicts). Well, we're done Now, right? Wrong! Mario & Luigi brought Star Sprites into the picture! What are these? The Missing Link between Star Kids and Star Spirits(Thats Actually a Good Theory)? Well, what do YOU think?

-Being(s) Greater than Star Spirits -Star Spirits -Star Sprites -Star Kids -Power Stars -Shine Sprites -Bean Star & Cobalt Star -Star Shards
Luma's fall into a different Category all-together, though!

Well, you have, in order: - Star Spirits (protecting the Star Rod and using it to make wishes (prayers) come true) - Starfy (prince of Star Haven, but lives in a far castle and doesn't really have an important role) - Star Sprites (soldiers, both Geno and Starlow are Star Sprites) - From there, it divides into two. -- Stars that will eventually grant wishes and live in Star Haven: Star Kids -- Stars that will eventually transform into Power Stars, actual stars and other cosmic objects: Lumas ---- Star Kids will eventually become Star Sprites ---- Lumas can transform whenever they want
While Shine Sprites are artifacts made by Stars to create a spritual link between Mushroom World and Star Haven. One day a malediction touched Isle Delfino and created a magic barrier that'd weaken the Sun's light, but someone adventured to search for 120 Shine Sprites to weaken the barrier itself.

There is however a lack of Star Sprites in Paper Mario.

Oh, and Power Stars were made so that Star Haven would always be over Peach's Castle. Nobody in the MK really knows why the Power Stars are so important though, but they know that they must always be there. As for the Beanstar, it may be based on the Star Rod. Maybe that, a long time ago, the Star Spirits made the Beanstar so that they could grant the wishes they couldn't because of the high number of wishes they receive everyday. However it falled of Star Haven. To compensate this, the Star Spirits did so that the Beanstar would be inactive, and only a pure voice would wake it up.
Oh, and nothing's over the Star Spirits. The only things over the Star Spirits would be the Ancients (they created everything and probably hired the Star Spirits) but they don't exist anymore.

Well, Timpani(Tippi) is an Ancient. But I think there must be something Higher than the Star Spirits, as they seam pretty Clueless!

They are clueless because they chiefs aren't there anymore. <_>
And Timpani survived because Merlon turned her into a Pixl. As for Merlon(s), he's a descendant of the Ancients, not an Ancient himself, which prooves even more than they don't exist anymore.

I thought you meant star sprites like the adult stars in PM. I think they should be called starmen (that was the name of the original power-up anyway)

But when Mario touches a star spirit he doesn't get super invincibility does he?

Well I don't think the power-up star is alive. But you would think that a star kid would grow up into a star man.

A star man and a starman are two completely different things

Starmen are now called Super Stars anyway. Celestial powerful beings = Stars (with a big S) Cosmic objects = stars (with a small s) And everything's fixed.

The Lumas seem completely unrelated to the RPG star hierarchy, though. I see it as the difference between "heaven" and "sky". The RPG ones obviously are the subject of a religion, and have magic powers, but reside not too far from the surface of the world, in "heaven" (Star Road, Star Haven, what have you), a place more spiritually distant than physically. The Lumas, however, are not magical, instead they have the rather physical power of nuclear fusion, they are not worshipped, and they're situated rather far away from MK, in the "sky".

Actually Starmen/Super Stars are called Rainbow Stars, and have had a slight redesign... Most likely to avoid Confusion with Power Stars.

Rainbow Stars and Starmen are two different things. Rainbow stars give Mario invincibility, fast speed, a cool jump, and he changes colors rapidly. Starmen only give Mario invincibility and a cool jump. (And in Mario Kart it gives you a slight speed boost.
