For Mario? dsultimate.net/Board/upload/blog/1/entry-1355-the-possible-reasons-for-less-of-a-mario-fandom-online/Would have been longer, but I left it too long to write and forgot a whole lot. And in case you think I'm too harsh on fan sites, let's face it, many have problems less because they can't compete as much as outright not bothering to compete with Mario Wiki and Waluigious. Meh, many like The Mushroom Kingdom and Super Mario Bros HQ seem like the staff there are just getting quite jaded and bored of the Mario series and probably could do a great deal by hiring new writers.

Well to be honest, most Mario games don't really have what you would call a "story" or "plot". Now this doesn't affect the awsomeness of the game, but it does affect the fanbases

You forgot "The characters and universe are seriously underrated". Really, the Mario series, characters and universe have an enormous fanbase in Japan. In America ? It's not bad, but for most people it's just "A fat guy saves a princess from a dragon, you have fun rescueing her, the end". In Europe ? I don't even want to talk about it ("Mario sucks, it's for babies !" "Who's Mario ?" "When Mario is angry, he becomes Wario, I know this because I'm a geek ololz").
And I somewhat disagree with a part of this article. Arguing about Mario series' canon, universe, logic and stuff is very interesting because Niintendo doesn't explain everything intentionally. But it's not like I was a great theorist, an intelligent person or anything, so that doesn't really count.

It is interesting, but the point is that mistakenly, a lot of people probably think it isn't. I mean, if you go to this site, sure, you think the Mario series is all interesting to discuss, but at a glance? Many theorist types will see the phrases 'no official canon' and 'no timeline' and probably bolt. The Mario series in this sense isn't bad, it's just hugely underrated.
And people over here generally don't hate Mario as a series, it's just the haters and such are probably the vocal minority. The vast majority of Mario fans are probably people who don't spend all their time on internet forums. I mean, those millions of sales come from somewhere...

You win a golden cookie only for the Pennington thing. :3
Yeah, I live in France. Where we eat frogs, snails, rotten milk, and drink vine. Also where the president is an evil monsutah that more than 50% of the people hates.

Pretty much everyone in my school hates Mario, but they are mostly Modern Warfare 2 fanboys so I'm not too worried about that. However, one of my friends, who doesn't like Mario games, says that he hates it because Halo 3 excels it in story. Which it probably does, he also calls the games easy, but he no longer calls them that after dying on the first goomba 6 times in NSMBWii

About people liking other games, I remember I wanted to discuss this... in my opinion, people who like SMRPG more than any other Mario game are not Mario fans, they're Square fans and might not be realizing it. Seriously, SMRPG is far away in both gameplay and story from all other Mario games, and it has stuff like Geno and Culex in it that Nintendo would not do.
I would consider myself a very hardcore Mario fan, and I always felt my brain rejecting SMRPG information. I can never remember what any of the attacks do, what special effects the armor has... it's so non-Mario, so generic.

See, I really like SMRPG. Just not as a Mario game, though. It's still an excellent RPG that all fans of the genre should play.

@ Cheat-master And the last one is way too much like a Puppit in the Subspace Emissary.
Edit: Which I just realized was created some 15ish years later in Brawl. *facepalm*
