The boards from Mario Party 4 all have a visible "board game" border around them, as well as an unrealistic "patterned" background not unlike the starry sky background of all MP3 boards - link: i.imgur.com/WwdiE.jpg . So, they're not real.

I don't think the Mario Party games are Canon, but the areas could be Board Game iterations of actual Locations. I don't think it's a long-shot to assume that Toad opened an Amusement Park outside of Mushroom City...

We don't know if the worlds were right next to each other, or in a circle, or a bit everywhere on the continent, or anything. We can't really say anything when we don't know anything.

This is more general than anything, but... when maps are designed, especially not tiled, but drawn ones, everyone tends to put tall structures in the north. Mountains, towers, castles, they're all in the north, and especially distant objects like Peach's Castle to the north of Beanbean Kingdom. Putting it in the west, east, or south simply wouldn't have worked, so Beanbean Kingdom is to the south of Mushroom Kingdom simply because of the perspective of the map, and let me tell you, every new map referencing some background structure is going to be to the south of it.
Oh, and don't forget the ocean always in the south! No matter whether it's a warm sea or not.

So basially, Miyamoto cares less about the Mario canon than X-Play does

I think Miyamoto has stated that there is no Mario canon, or rather "the story is really unimportant" or something.
Of course, we ignore that.

He said there wasn't a definitive setting. It's true, Peach's Castle keeps changing, Toad Town keeps changing, the MK's map keeps changing. But it's to make things fresh and new in every game. It's easy to make a big map by mixing all maps anyway. Also, look closely at the intro of SMG2: first you see Peach's Castle as it was in NSMBW, then as it was in SMG (approximatively).
Also, I know it's not what you said, but a link between two maps doesn't have to be a castle or particular structure or anything. Look at PM2's map, the ice mountains to the left are the ones to the north-east of PM1's map. And it makes sense: Bob-Ombs are originally from Fahr Outpost, they travelled through the mountains until reaching Koopa Bros.' Fortress.

It may make sense, but this ties in with what I said: mountains are always in the North. So, we have one map where they're in the north-east and one where they're in the north-west, and we can form theories about it. Sure they're icy, and that might be a justification for them being north, buuuuut... not really. They're not further up north than Hooktail's castle or Shooting Star Hill, two perfectly warm places.

The Mushroom Kingdom has some really messed up stuff. Like Dry Dry Desert being right next to Toad Town (somewhat). Or look at the cannon level in NSMB World 2. You can see frosty hills from the desert.

Yes, I always found that cannon fascinating! It's some sort of Hailfire Peaks going on. Maybe the hills are a mirage, though. Or just some magic that indicates where you will go with that cannon.

Or it's simply to tell you where you're going ? Still, every aera in the MK has a different climate. So finding polar-like mountains between a desert and a forest isn't too special. x)
