Kamek has been shrouded in mystery since he has only been shown in PiT and Yoshi's Island games.
But at least we know that he was Bowser's babysitter until Bowser grew up
If anyone has more info on Kamek please contribute

In Japan, he has very little defining characteristics, being just an average everyday Magikoopa. However, in the rest of the world, he was given a unique name, causing many to search out these characteristics. Basically, in either region, the only real things that are official are that Kamek is a Magikoopa who controls the Toadies in order to capture the baby Mario Bros. in order to stop them from overthrowing the Koopa Kingdom. He is NOT the head Magikoopa by any official source, because of him just a Magikoopa as I said above. This is primarily the reason for the creation of Kammy Koopa, so Bowser could have a sidekick in all regions that seems unique. Anyway, continued...he also is one that has been shown to do a variety of moves in the Western world, but remember...since Kamek is not named in Japan, there is no proof there that the Magikoopa in Yoshi's Island is the same as the one in YIDS, Tetris Attack, or PiT, although it is assumed. These skills include but are not limited to size changing spells, riding on a broomstick, multiplying himself, attacking with fire, and using the standard Magikoopa spell as seen in Super Mario World. Kamek also tried to kidnap the babies in YIDS...but don't ask me to get into that because I was not a fan of the game in any way, and the story was no exception. There is also no proof that Kamek appeared in YIDS, even though there are Toadies. There is no rule that says Toadies have to be controlled by him. As for being a babysitter to Baby Bowser...that's not to say he had to be of high status. He could have been any old Magikoopa that applied for a job to be babysitter. Regardless of this, however, one thing is clear in all regions: he rules everything from behind the scenes. I believe personally he's a no-name Magikoopa with a small following trying to get on Baby Bowser's good side.

It just calls him "Kamek." In Japan, they're all Kamekkus, so there's no way to prove it.

The U.S version does call him Kamek, but that's not the general term used here. If he wasn't Kamak the U.S version would have just called him a magikoopa.
But it is true that magikkoopa are called kamek in Japan. You can even see a localzation goof in Super Princess Peach, when they refer to the magikoopa boss as "a kamek"

Edit: I was on Super Mario Wiki and they say that Kamek is not just another Magikoopa because in YIDS he traveled from the future with Bowser to find Star Babbies

For some reason I always thought that he was Bowser's uncle or father, but I don't wanna stir up a 4 page long disscussion, so I'll leave it at that.

Yoshi's Island was a pretty poorly translated game, and at the time "Magikoopa" was not a very common term. So he got named Kamek by accident. Fans read too much into this.

There have been some games that have both Magikoopas and a sort of Kamek figure

No there hasn't. There's been games with Kammy, yes, but as I said, she is a fully fledged character in both regions. Kamek has never been in a game with other Magikoopas.

The Mario Comic had a specific Magikoopa with defining characteristics and personality the same as Kamek's.

Also think about it. In Japan Bowser is called Koopa but his soldiers can be called Koopas too. But you wouldn't say Bowser is that inferior

In my mind, Kamek has always been a major character and rather unique among the Magikoopas. I envisioned him to be a very powerful wizard but a sort of "Special Forces" Koopa. He handles missions and projects of high importance and tends to let lesser Magikoopas do the grunt work.
New Super Mario Bros Wii may be an exception to this rule but then again this shows every sign of being a special attack in Bowser's mind. It is the first truly canonical appearance of the Koopalings in a long time and the attack not only captures Princess Peach but many seemingly random citizens (Toads). Bowser seemed to be pulling out the big guns this time, including the highly powerful, unique Magikoopa.
Just to end my ramblings, I also tend to think that Kamek is Kammy's son.
