Naval Pirahna's lair might have been filled with nutrients, but what about the deserts in Yoshi's Island DS? They had Nipper spores, made by the Nipper Dandelions and I'm sure the deserts had very few nutrients. Also, a better solution than sprouting on contact for them to survive would simply be to have lots of them. I think with their numbers as well as their defenses and their instant growth, Nippers could create a pretty drastic negative effect on the ecosystem.

I'm guessing that Nippers have to find a suitable "rooting spot" to be able to take root and grow into their next stage. If they don't find such a spot quickly, they die. That would explain why the don't overpower the ecosystem, and why there're so many of them - species that die easily as babies tend to produce tons of offspring at once.

One problem though: Why do they need to root? They're perfectly capable of taking a bite out of Mario when they're walking around.

They may not be able to get all their required nutrients without being rooted. For example, it doesn't look like their mouth is able to drink; they'd need water from the ground.

I've never heard of a separate way of drinking water and eating before, but I suppose it'd make sense.

Real carnivorous plants like v. fly traps and pitcher plants take water from the ground and eat bugs that enter through the other end. Actually, most plants take water from the roots and photosynthesize at the leaves making sugars out of sunlight. That's kind of like eating too. And if a nipper spore landed in a poor area, then it would sprout in order so that it could hop over and root in a better area. Making lots of spores would take more energy for the plants and at a certain point wouldn't increase the chance of any of them surviving since all those plants would then be competing for resources. I'm thinking the plants don't actually want to destroy the ecosystem just as common weeds do not necessarily want to destroy our ecosystem. The plants just want to pass on their genes to future generations and ensure the survival of their species.

I wouldn't put it above Bowser's troops to temporarily cause plants to spontaneously produce more Nippers just to bug the good guys.
In fact, some of the spores that we don't see being produced by Pirahnas may be delivered by the Koopa Troop. They probably have some greenhouse somewhere where they grow the things.

Pipe Land, perhaps?

Those pirahna plant levels in pipe land might as well be a greenhouse for them because they were the only enemies in those levels
