That would seem very unlikely.

That would seem very unlikely. What the play being broken up?

Yeah. Maybe as a TV show, but not as a play.

Well, maybe the game is the uncut director's version of the play, and so it includes every detail of the adventure.

I just found a quote from loard crump that blantly says PMTTYD wasn't a play.
Lord Crump: [while in disguise] And you! Yes, out there. In front of the TV screen-I'm talking to you! It may be really obvious to YOU who I am... but I still have Mario fooled, so no telling! Or else! if it was a play, wouldn't he say "hey you out in the audiance".
heres a quote from goombelle that adds to TTYD's realism Goombella: [using her tattle function] That's Stewart, the blimp conductor. He checks tickets for blimp passengers. He's what you call a Cheep-Cheep. Normally they don't hang out on land, but... They've actually been around a while in the Mario Bros. series, you know. Oh, gosh, I just broke through the fourth wall, there, didn't I? Sorry, just forget it. she broke the wall and mentioned it.
and finally I'd like to crumply claw's "herriengway's play" bit as multiple people in both games mentioned about making a play or story called paper mario. meh solved

Breaking the fourth wall is something that video games do to be humorous and shouldn't be taken seriously.
